Having dry, cracked or oily skin is definitely unpleasant. Although it is possible to have rejuvenating treatments in a beauty center, you can make it smooth and soft even in the shower by using a sugar scrub. Applying this product correctly (and frequently) helps exfoliate the body and remove dead cells, leaving the skin soft and smooth.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Choose a Sugar Scrub
Step 1. Look for a scrub containing fine particles
Sugar scrubs with large grains can irritate and even cause skin splits if you have sensitive skin. Smaller sugar grains are more delicate and less abrasive.
- Muscovado sugar is one of the most delicate of all and is suitable for both face and body skin.
- Turbinado sugar (also called brown raw sugar) tends to have larger particles. Consequently, if you see it among the ingredients, consider that the scrub will be more aggressive.
Step 2. Choose a moisturizing scrub for particularly dry skin
Although sugar has naturally wetting properties (i.e. it retains moisture), some exfoliants are more moisturizing than others. Choose one that contains ingredients that plump and rehydrate the skin (such as hyaluronic acid, coconut or avocado oil, glycerin or essential oils) if it is prone to dehydration.
Step 3. Choose a fragrance that has aromacological properties
Look for scrubs containing essential oils suitable for your needs. For example, if you suffer from stress, lavender exfoliants will calm you down. If you are feeling fatigued, the smell of lemon or peppermint will have energizing properties.
Other popular fragrances in the aromatherapy industry include eucalyptus, which frees the sinuses, patchouli, which relieves anxiety, and rosemary, which promotes greater concentration
Step 4. Make your own homemade sugar scrub if you have a tight budget
Using easily available ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry, such as olive oil, honey, and sugar, you can make a DIY scrub.
Making your own sugar scrub at home helps to control every single ingredient you use, thus avoiding all chemicals and additives that could be bad for your body or the environment
Part 2 of 2: Apply the Sugar Scrub
Step 1. Moisten the skin
Warm water softens the skin and prepares it for exfoliation. In general, it is best to immerse yourself in the bath or shower for 5-10 minutes before starting to exfoliate the body.
- Excessively hot water can dry out the skin. The optimal temperature should be below 40 ° C so that the skin is not affected (if it becomes red it means that it is too hot!).
- If you plan to shave your legs, do so before using the scrub to prevent itching and irritation.
- Wash your skin before exfoliating to remove sweat, dirt, and makeup, otherwise the operation could cause dirt residue to penetrate the pores.
Step 2. Massage the scrub into the skin
Exerting gentle pressure, massage the product on the skin making a circular motion with your fingertips. This will not only help you remove dead skin cells, it will also promote circulation and stimulate the production of collagen in the body, a protein that helps fight wrinkles and keep skin young.
- Start from your upper body and work your way down.
- Be careful not to exfoliate too vigorously, otherwise you risk damaging the skin.
Step 3. Rinse with warm water
After the scrub it is not necessary to use shower gels or soaps. To further hydrate the skin and make it even smoother, let the product work for a couple of minutes and then rinse it well.
Step 4. Dry off
Gently pat your body with a towel until the skin is completely dry.
Step 5. Complete the treatment with a lotion or body oil
Once your skin is dry, apply a lotion or oil to moisturize it after exfoliation. Do this immediately after drying it, until the pores are dilated and able to absorb the active ingredients more easily and quickly.
- Do you have a jar of extra virgin coconut oil? Having a high saturated fat content, you can use this substance to hydrate your skin even more economically but still effectively. Only use it if you don't tend to suffer from breakouts and impurities.
- Always apply sunscreen after exfoliation, as your skin will be more vulnerable. Use a cream with SPF 30 or higher and broad spectrum protection.
Step 6. Repeat the treatment once or twice a week
The sugar scrub should not be used every day. Excessive exfoliation can irritate your skin, so try to use the product a maximum of 3 times a week and no more.
