Is your hair very puffy and you have a hard time keeping it at bay? Are you constantly looking for a way to make them smooth and disciplined? The good news is you can stop looking! Everyone has hair with different characteristics; whether yours are puffy by nature or the effect is the result of aggressive treatment, such as a dye, there are tons of cosmetic products and care methods you can choose from to finally get the look you want.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Purify and Moisturize the Hair
Step 1. Wash your hair as rarely as possible
The sebaceous glands in the scalp produce oils that naturally moisturize the hair. Each time you shampoo these oils are washed off, so your hair feels dry and dehydrated. Instead of washing them every day, simply rinse them when you shower and use the shampoo only 3-5 days apart.
If between washes they seem dirty or heavy, you can use a dry shampoo to absorb excess sebum and restore lightness and volume
Step 2. Use shampoo and conditioner formulated for dry hair
Select a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to make your hair smoother and less voluminous. Read the directions on the labels and choose products aimed at moisturizing the hair and making it more disciplined and less frizzy. You should avoid those that contain sulphates, as they tend to dehydrate them and therefore increase frizz.
- Avoid all those products that serve to give more volume to the hair because they would make them even more puffy and frizzy.
- Apply the conditioner only from the middle of the lengths to the ends and leave it on for at least 2 minutes before rinsing.
Step 3. Rinse your hair with warm or cold water
The cold one, in particular, favors the closure of the cuticles; consequently the hydration provided by the shampoo and conditioner will remain sealed inside the hair, which will therefore be smoother and shinier. Try not to use water that is too hot when you bathe them before washing them and rinse them off the shampoo and conditioner by mixing it so that it is lukewarm or, better yet, cold.
Part 2 of 3: Blow Dry Hair That Has a Tendency to Swell
Step 1. Dry them from excess water carefully
You should avoid using regular terry towels, as the fibers of the fabric can annoy the cuticles and help create the unwanted frizz. The best method is to pat them gently with a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel. Also, avoid squeezing or scrubbing them too hard.
Step 2. Treat them gently when you comb them to remove any knots
If you have curly hair, it is best to comb it in the shower after applying the conditioner. If, on the other hand, they are smooth, you can wait until you have done the last rinse. In both cases it is useful to use a wide-toothed comb and start untangling the knots from the tips and then slowly go up towards the roots.
Do not use the brush on wet hair as it tends to break more easily
Step 3. Let them dry naturally
To prevent them from becoming puffy or frizzy, it's best to let the air do the work and avoid using a blow dryer, especially if you have curly hair. Apply a moisturizer, such as a cream, serum or oil, and then shape your curls as you wish. If you have straight hair, simply use a taming product and let it dry naturally.
If you prefer to use a hair dryer, don't forget to apply a heat protection product first. The ideal is to use a hair dryer with a ceramic coating and ion technology to counteract the frizz effect. Alternatively, you can use a hairdryer hood that blows the hot air downwards
Part 3 of 3: Styling Tips
Step 1. Follow their natural style
With so many options available, it's impossible not to find a product that can define and enhance your natural curls while counteracting frizz.
- Gel, mousse or cream products designed to revive curls contain ingredients called polymers that coat the hair shaft and "fix" them in their natural form.
- If your hair is wavy and thin, it is best to use a product in the form of a mousse so that it is not weighed down. If they are thick and curly, you should opt for a gel or cream.
Step 2. Stop using products that contain alcohol
Most sprays or mousses have a high alcohol content, which can cause cuticles to swell. It can also dehydrate the hair, which will consequently break and swell more easily. Try to choose alcohol-free products formulated to reduce frizz, such as some serums or creams.
Step 3. Purchase a boar bristle brush
If your hair has been damaged by a dye or is simply dry by nature, a boar bristle brush may be the right solution to reduce frizz. Their natural characteristics allow to distribute the oils produced by the sebaceous glands of the scalp from the roots to the ends of the hair without stressing them.
Step 4. Tame unruly, fluttering hair with a curling iron
It might seem like a contraindicated technique, yet wrapping fluttering hair around a curling iron can help keep it at bay and make it less frizzy. Make sure they are perfectly dry before starting and remember that it is best to use the curling iron only occasionally, so reserve this method only for special occasions when you want to show off perfect hair. In any case, set it to a low temperature and do not leave it in contact with your hair for too long.
Whenever you use heat to style your hair you risk damaging it. Don't forget to apply a heat protective product
Step 5. Get a hot oil treatment once a week
It is an excellent remedy to make them stronger and hydrated, suitable for all hair types, so you can also offer it to your friends. Use jojoba oil to strengthen cuticles and prevent frizz. Heat the oil and then massage it into your hair and scalp.
- After applying it, you can wrap your hair in a shower cap and leave it on for 30 minutes before shampooing.
- Wrap a warm towel around the cap or use a blow dryer to keep the oil at the right temperature and help it penetrate deeply.
Advice
- Spray a polishing product on a large flat brush and sweep it over the surface of the hair to style the fluttering ones.
- Go to the hairdresser to get your hair cut that is badly damaged and trim it regularly to prevent split ends.
- When the weather is humid, keep your hair tied back to your destination, then let it go after you reach it.
