Knowing how to draw a pair of lips can be a very useful skill, especially if you like dabbling in portraits. This article will tell you how to draw them in a few simple steps. Let's begin!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Female Lips
Step 1. Draw three circles that overlap to form an imaginary triangle
Step 2. Draw two curved lines, one upper and one lower, which follow the outline of the circles
Step 3. Draw two more wavy lines using the outline of the circles again
Draw the first curved line in the center of the mouth and the second, smaller one at the top of the upper lip.
Step 4. Extend the center wavy line to the corners of the mouth in both directions
Step 5. Erase the guidelines
Step 6. Color the lips by distributing the shadows and highlights appropriately
Method 2 of 2: Male Lips
Step 1. Draw a couple of circles where you want to draw the mouth
Step 2. Add two more circles slightly overlapping the first ones
The new circles should be positioned lower left and lower right than the first two.
Step 3. Draw a wavy line that separates the two pairs of circles following their profile
Step 4. Outline the outline of the upper lip by drawing a line with two symmetrical humps
Again the circles will act as guidelines.
Step 5. Repeat to outline the outline of the lower lip
Draw a curved line following the profile of the two lower circles starting from one corner of the mouth to get to the other.
Step 6. Erase the guidelines
Step 7. Color the lips
Advice
- Each person's lips are unique, some plumper, some thinner. Some people clearly exhibit the inside of their mouth when they smile, while others don't even show a tooth. You will have to practice a lot to be able to represent the particularities of each with a simple sketch, but if you repeat the process many times making a small change each time you will be able to find out what you need to do to achieve the desired effect.
- Create the pencil drawing so you can easily erase any mistakes.
- Men have thinner lips than women. If the woman you want to portray is wearing lip gloss, leave some blank spaces to reproduce the effect and make sure the result is natural.
