Celery strands are quite hard, chewy and, when present, it is best to remove them to enjoy the rest of the vegetable as a snack or as an integral part of a preparation.
Steps
Step 1. Make a small incision at the base of the stem
It should be about 3cm long.
Step 2. Use a sharp knife to pull the fibrous strands towards the cut
When they reach it, they automatically detach from the vegetable.
Step 3. Try an alternative technique
If you prefer, you can use a peeler to gently "peel" the celery.
Advice
- Even if you have the strands removed, you can still stuff the inside of the stem with cream or spreadable cheese.
- You should rinse the vegetable under cold running water to remove the soil from the end near the roots.
- Once the filaments have been removed, diced celery is a perfect ingredient to enrich soups that need a vegetable base; it is also excellent in salads, flans, fried rice and vegetable fillings.
- You can also fill the celery with spreadable cheese and olives or with a cream based on cheese, allspice and mayonnaise; you can eat it plain or with a sandwich for a healthy snack.
