This article explains how to uninstall a laptop hard drive. The procedure to follow varies depending on the make and model of your device. Normally it is possible to access the hard disk of the computer directly from a panel placed on the bottom or on one of the sides of the body. Before starting, disconnect the computer from the mains and remove the battery. To do this you will need to use a screwdriver.
Steps
Step 1. Back up the files you want to keep
Before uninstalling the hard drive from your laptop, make sure you have a backup of all the files it contains in case any problems arise. You can back up using an external hard drive, USB memory drive, or clouding service like Google Drive or Dropbox.
Step 2. Disconnect any cables connected to the laptop
You will need to disconnect the power cord, USB cables, network cables, telephone line (if you are using the computer modem), and any other devices or peripherals currently connected to the laptop from the computer.
Step 3. Remove the battery
In most cases it is necessary to press a special release lever or button in order to extract the battery from its seat. Press the release button and at the same time pull the battery out of its compartment.
Step 4. Press and hold the power button on your computer for about 15 seconds
This step is to eliminate any residual charge left inside the computer's electronic components, to avoid getting shocked when you have to come into contact with the hard drive or other internal components of the laptop.
Step 5. Remove the panel that gives access to the hard drive
It can be located at the bottom of the laptop or along the sides, depending on the make and model of the computer. The correct panel should be marked with an icon with multiple CDs stacked on top of each other.
In some cases the hard drive is located underneath the motherboard or keyboard. If so, removing it will be much more complex. Consult the instruction manual to find out how to proceed or contact a specialized technician
Step 6. Uninstall the hard drive
Your computer's main memory unit may be held in place by an additional mechanism which varies by laptop make and model. In some cases you will have to unscrew some fixing screws, while in others there may be a release button or lever that you will have to press before you can remove the disc from its seat.
Step 7. Separate the hard drive from the connectors
Push or pull the drive away from the side where the connectors are, then pull it out of its slot. There may be a tab on the hard drive that you can use to remove it more easily. In some cases you will need to help yourself by leveraging a thin object.
Step 8. Remove the hard drive from the hard drive holder or retention bracket
After you remove the hard drive from the computer, check that it is not inserted into a metal holder or bracket. If so, you'll need to remove it in order to install a new hard drive. Normally this involves unscrewing 2/4 fixing screws located on the sides of the hard drive. Unscrew the screws to separate the holder from the hard drive. If you are performing this procedure to replace the old hard drive with a new model, at this point you will need to insert the installation media on the new hard drive to then be able to place it in the laptop bay.
