Step 1. Choose a field of study
Getting a degree takes time and money, so you need to have a clear plan and purpose in mind before doing so. Determine the sector in which you want to study; or, if you have a career change in mind, choose from study programs that will provide you with access to that job.
Step 2. Find the Universities that accept enrollments in the field of study you have chosen
Many universities apply restrictions on the admissions of those who want to obtain a second degree. Many allow obtaining a second degree only in certain fields of study, while others refuse admission altogether. This is because the majority of schools identify their primary purpose in granting a degree to those who do not have one and help students who want to obtain advanced degrees such as Masters and PhDs.
Step 3. Apply to different Universities that fall within the field of your choice
When you apply, you must be sure that you have all the requisites required, and that you provide all the necessary documentation. However, often the most important part about your application for a second degree is the motivation you state. In this statement you will need to convince the University that admitting you to the program is an advantage for both you and them.
- When writing your statement, try to avoid giving the impression that you simply want to change jobs. It would be better if you focused on the desire to want to deepen and complete your current skills.
- It is also preferable to convince the judging board that you are interested in obtaining an advanced degree after the second degree. For example, you may have a degree in Project Management in the construction industry but wish to do a master's degree in a related field - Civil Engineering. To do this, you need an engineering degree. In your request you must provide as many details as possible regarding this project.
Step 4. Make sure you have enough time to get a second degree
Many classes take place during the day, so it can be difficult to make them coincide with your work schedule. Before making the request, make sure you can take time off work; you can work with a tutor to help you plan your schedule and avoid conflicts between various commitments.
Step 5. Make sure you have enough cash to get a degree
One of the main obstacles in obtaining a second degree is related to paying for it. When it comes to the first degree, you can access different forms of loans or scholarships, which however are not dedicated to students who want to achieve a second degree. This can mean having to completely self-finance your second degree, or having to access a substantial loan.
