Are you exploring an Ocean biome in Minecraft, or do you want to travel along a long river without worrying about the terrain? Building a boat requires only a few simple materials, and this medium can help you speed up your exploration. Start reading from Step 1 to get started making and using boats in Minecraft.

Steps
Method 1 of 2: Building a Boat
Step 1. Get the materials
You will need five wooden planks of any type (they don't all have to be the same type of tree). You can get four planks from a block of wood. Wood blocks can be obtained by cutting down trees, in NPC villages and - rarely - in mines.
Step 2. Arrange the wooden planks in the crafting grid
Do it as follows:
- Place three wooden planks in the bottom three squares of the grid.
- Put a plank in the box above the lower left plank.
- Put the last axis in the box above the lower right axis.
- All other boxes should remain blank.
Step 3. Build the boat
You can add the boat to your inventory by dragging it to an empty space or by holding ⇧ Shift and clicking on it.
Method 2 of 2: Put the Boat in the Water
Step 1. Put the boat in the water
Find a point where the water is still, choose the boat from the inventory and then right click on the water: you will place the boat. If you put the boat on the current, it will start following it.
- You can also put a boat on land with a right click. You can control it on the ground, but it will move extremely slowly. It also sinks to the ground, so you may need to destroy nearby blocks to get it back.
- You can put the boat on the lava, but it will break when you try to enter.
Step 2. Enter the boat
Right click on the boat to enter it. You can do it from any direction, even from below if you are underwater. Press ⇧ Left Shift to exit the boat.
Step 3. Drive the boat
It will go in the direction you point your cursor when you press the W key. Pressing the S Back key will quickly turn the boat in the opposite direction.
- The boats are extremely fragile and can break easily. If the boat is destroyed, it will drop three wooden planks and two sticks. If the boat is destroyed by an attack, it will drop a boat.
- You can shoot using the boat to move slightly faster.
Advice
- If you push a boat on the snow, the snow will melt.
- Speed potions can make the boat faster.
- The boats are moved by the current or controlled by the player.
- As a means of transportation, off-piste boats behave like mine carts. However, the boats act as solid blocks and can be placed on other players, monsters and other boats. It is also possible to load players, monsters and other boats onto the boats.
- You can use doors to prevent boats from going with the flow. This is the best method for creating ports or channels.
- These steps work for the PC and console versions of Minecraft. Boats are not available in the Pocket version until 0.9.1.
