Steps
Method 1 of 2: Defeat Sudowoodo
Step 1. Reach the city of Goldenrod City
Step 2. Defeat the Gym Leader of Goldenrod City, that is, Clare

Step 6. Use the watering can to wet the tree
You will be attacked by a level 20 Sudowoodo.
Step 7. Defeat the Sudowoodo

- In Pokémon Gold and Silver you will only have this chance to catch a Sudowood, unless you trade it with another player, so this will be the only time in the game where you will have a chance to encounter one. Before starting the fight, be sure to save the game so you can start over if you lose or fail to catch him (if that is your goal).
- Sudowoodo is a "Rock" type Pokémon and Not "Grass" type (although the fact that it is a tree may make you think otherwise).
Step 8. After beating, capturing or running away Sudowood, follow the path until you meet a fat guy, then talk to him
At the end of the conversation he will give you the special move "Rock Smash".
Method 2 of 2: Buy the Rock Smash Move
Step 1. Reach the city of Goldenrod City
Step 2. Enter the "Goldenrod City" "Mall"

- Before facing Clare, try to have at least three level 20 Pokémon.
Warnings
- The "Rock Smash" move in this version of Pokémon is a "Technical Machine" and not a "Hidden Machine" as it appears in more modern versions. For this reason, choose wisely the Pokémon you want to teach this move to.
- When fighting with Chiara avoid using Pokémon of "Fire", "Beetle" or "Flying" type, as her Miltank knows the "Rock" type move called "Rolling" capable of dealing damage for 5 turns by increasing power at every turn.
