There are several options for website owners who intend to share certain information with their customers or users online. One of the options is to create a link pointing to the path of the uploaded file on your internet host so that your customers can download the file. This article will show you step-by-step how to create a link from which to find a Word document on your site. Let's begin!

Step 1. Open the source code of your web page

This is the page where you want to insert the Word document. You can use the text editor of your choice. This article, for example, was created with Notepad ++.

Step 2. Enter the tag in the body of the html code. In this example, the link will be placed within a paragraph. However, you can choose anywhere on the web page to insert your Microsoft Word document, it does not necessarily have to be inserted inside the tags (these basically indicate a paragraph of the text).

Step 4. Paste the code from Step 3 into your text editor, and replace the part of the code that contains "YourDocument.doc" with a name of your choice

If you intend to use or save the document in Microsoft Office Word 97-2003 format, don't forget to add the extension after the file name.

Advice

  • Make sure the Word document is saved in the same folder or location as the html document is located.
  • If you are using Microsoft Word 2007 or later, always save the Word document with a ".docx" extension. For more information on the Microsoft Word extension, you can check the Wikipedia page listed in the "Sources and Citations" section of this article.
  • An alternative way to the one shown in Step 6 (preview the result), is to open the folder where the web page is located and insert the link to the Word document in the html file. Click on your browser icon. The web page should be displayed the same way it appears by clicking the "Preview in Browser" button in the Dreamweaver program.
