If you have a Netflix account, chances are you want to change its settings to personalize it. Some of the aspects that can be changed are for example the settings related to the "Parental Control", the e-mail address and much more. This guide will take you step by step.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Change Settings Using a Computer
Step 1. Use a computer
If you are using the Netflix service on a tablet, console or other device, skip to the next section of the guide. Unlike a computer, most of these devices don't have the ability to access the full list of Netflix settings.
Some internet browsers for mobile devices give access to the configuration options described in this section
Step 2. Go to the web page for your Netflix account, then log in
Alternatively, log in to the website, move the mouse cursor over the name of your profile at the top right of the page and choose Your account from the menu that appears. There are three types of profiles that have different levels of access:
- The main profile, usually the first one that appears in the list. Use this profile to change your subscription plan, email address, login password, and billing information.
- Additional profiles that have access to all settings that were not listed in the previous point. Whenever possible, always use your personal profile, as some changes to the settings are personal and therefore only affect the individual account.
- Child profiles do not have access to any kind of settings.
Step 3. Change your subscription plan
The first two sections of your account page are: "Subscription and Billing" and "Plan Information". Use these options to change information such as your e-mail address, login password, payment method or plan for using streaming content.
The meaning of most of these options is easy to understand and need no explanation, but you may not know the email settings. This page allows you to choose whether to receive e-mails from Netflix regarding new content, updates or special offers
Step 4. Review your subscription details
Check these settings if you want to make changes to how you stream Netflix content.
Step 5. Check the "Settings" section
This is the next section after the "Subscription and Billing" and "Plan Information" section of your account page. These options allow you to activate a "Parental Controls", participate in the test of new features or activate a new device on which to enjoy Netflix content (if you reside in the USA you will also be given the opportunity to change the address to which you will receive the DVDs rented and, for an additional cost, you can also rent the contents in Blu-ray format):
- Enable the "Participate in tests" option to be able to preview new Netflix features before they are made public to all users. Normally these are small changes to the graphical interface or recommended content, but occasionally they may be innovative features such as "Privacy Mode".
- If you are a US resident, you can assign rented DVDs to a specific profile; this way you will avoid family quarrels about who has the right to choose what to watch. For an additional fee, you can increase the number of DVDs that can be rented at the same time and choose which profiles can do so.
Step 6. Choose your language, content playback and subtitle settings
The last section of the page, called "My Profile", relates exclusively to the currently selected account. The configuration options included in this section include:
- Language: allows you to set the default language. However, remember that not all Netflix content is available in all languages.
- Subtitle Appearance: This option allows you to change the color, size and font used to display subtitles.
- Content viewing activity: allows you to notify Netflix not to add further recommended content to the relevant category in the "My List" list.
- Playback settings: used to reduce the maximum usage threshold of the data connection (very useful option if you are using a mobile device whose data connection has a monthly traffic threshold). It also allows you to disable automatic playback of the next episode when watching TV series.
Step 7. Profile Management
Access the following page or move the mouse pointer over your avatar located at the top right of the page, then choose "Manage profiles" from the menu that appears. On the page that appeared you will have the possibility to add a new profile, delete one and set the profiles related to the youngest of the family. The profiles relating to children do not have access to content intended for an adult audience.
Deleting a profile permanently removes all associated data, such as the history of content viewed, ratings, and recommended content. All this information can no longer be restored
Step 8. Access the advanced streaming settings
While playing a video through Netflix, hold down the "⇧ Shift + Alt" keys (on Mac you need to use the ⌥ Option key), then click on the screen with the left mouse button. An advanced settings pop-up window will appear which includes some very useful options:
- Select the Stream Management item, choose the Manual Selection option, then choose the buffer size (i.e. the speed at which Netflix will attempt to preload content while viewing).
- Select the A / V Sync Compensation option, then adjust its slider to correct any synchronization problems between images and audio.
Method 2 of 3: Change Settings Using Other Devices
Step 1. Whenever possible, use the version of the internet browser for mobile devices
Many devices don't have full access to Netflix settings. Log in directly to the Netflix website using the internet browser on your device or computer. This way you can change your preferences as described in the previous section.
It may take up to 24 hours for the new changes to be applied to all other devices connected to your profile as well
Step 2. Change subtitles and language on Android devices
Start streaming video content using the Netflix app for Android. To access the settings, tap anywhere on the screen, then select the "Dialogues" icon (characterized by a speech bubble) in the upper right of the window.
Some devices may make additional settings available. Find the settings icon for the Netflix application you're using. Normally this icon is characterized by three vertically aligned dots
Step 3. Change settings on Apple devices
To change the language and appearance of subtitles on iOS devices, tap the screen while content is playing, then select the "Dialogues" icon at the top right of the window. To access all configuration settings, you must close the Netflix application, start the "Settings" application and scroll through the list until you find the Netflix option.
Step 4. Access audio and subtitle settings on other devices
Most game consoles, TV accessories, and modern internet-connected televisions do not have access to the full list of configuration settings. In this case you will need to log into your profile using a computer. The only editable options are those related to audio and subtitles, which can normally be accessed as follows:
- While streaming content, press the Down button on the D-pad (on most consoles).
- After selecting a title, but without starting playback, choose the "Dialogues" icon (characterized by a cartoon) or the "Audio and subtitles" item (Wii, Google TV, Roku, most Blu-ray players and Smart TV).
- While streaming content, select the "Dialogues" icon (with a speech bubble) (Wii U).
- While streaming content, press and hold the center button on the remote (Apple TV).
Method 3 of 3: Evaluate Movies to Improve Tips
Step 1. Evaluate the movies
To do so, access the following page or select the Ratings link on the "Your Account" page. Choose the desired number of stars (1 to 5) to assign your rating to each movie or episode. The more ratings you provide, the more accurate Netflix's recommendations will be on the content that best suits your tastes.
- From the description page, you can search for any movie and rate it. To increase the accuracy of Netflix's recommendations, repeat this step for all your favorite movies.
- If you don't want Netflix to recommend watching a particular movie, select the "I'm Not Interested" option at the bottom of the content rating section.
Step 2. Wait for the new settings to take effect
The process by which Netflix updates recommendations reserved for you could take up to 24 hours. Once the update is complete, the content suggested by Netflix should be changed on all devices used to access the service.
Advice
- If you are watching Netflix content on a TV, the settings menu may look different. If you can't find a certain option, try doing it using your computer. If you make a change to a setting on one device, within the next 24 hours you should see it applied to all other devices connected to your profile as well.
- To be able to consult the list of all the subtitled contents in your language, you can access the following page.
