This chic and flirty hairstyle has remained popular for decades, and it's easy to do at home. Whether you're convinced you're a 1930s woman or just want to experiment with a new style, read on to learn how to do this gorgeous look.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the Hair for the Hairstyle
Step 1. Wash your hair
You have to start with wet hair for this hairstyle to last, so wash it using your favorite shampoo and conditioner.
Step 2. Blot them until dry
Don't dry your hair completely, simply pat it gently with a towel, making sure it doesn't drip anymore.
Step 3. Apply the gel
Any kind of strong gel is fine. Use a generous amount on the top and in the middle, where the waves will be, and spread a small amount into the rest of the hair.
Step 4. Part your hair
Use a fine-toothed comb to create the parting on one side. Extend it backwards more than you usually would, until it almost reaches the end of the head. Make sure it's neat and straight.
Part 2 of 3: Creating the Waves
Step 1. Comb your hair forward to the side that is larger than the parting
Leave the other part, the smaller one, intact for now. Comb your hair straight forward on the wider side of the parting.
Step 2. Put the index parallel to the line and press
You need to line up your finger with the parting and press to keep the hair immediately attached to the parting in place.
Step 3. Comb the hair next to the finger backwards
This part is a bit difficult. Keep your finger firmly in place so that the hair underneath stays in its combed forward position. Now take the comb and use it to comb the hair immediately close to the back finger, so that it goes in the opposite direction to those under your index finger.
Step 4. Put your middle finger next to the index
You have to use your middle finger to hold the hair in place right next to your index finger.
Step 5. Press the two fingers together and secure the hair with a metal clip
The hair that rises between the fingers will become a wave. Keep them in place with a metal clip. The clip should be parallel to the row.
Step 6. Make more waves
Comb the hair immediately next to the clip forward, and hold it in place with your index finger. Comb the hair next to the index back, and stop it with the middle finger. Press your fingers together and secure the raised hair between your fingers with a metal hair clip. Continue making waves until you reach the end of the ear.
Step 7. Make waves on the hair on the other side of the part
Do the same thing on the other side, using your fingers and clips to create waves up to the end of the ear.
Step 8. Let your hair dry
The hair should dry completely between the clips. Don't remove them if your hair is still wet, or the waves will give out.
Part 3 of 3: Completing the Look
Step 1. Take care of the rest of the hair
1930s waves are done on both sides of the middle part of the hair. The rest of the hair should be styled for a very refined look. Choose one of these options:
- If you have long hair, do some soft curls. After you put the clips on and your hair is still wet, put the curlers on the rest of your hair.
- Make a helmet. If you have short hair, you can curve the rest of the length inwards using some very large curlers.
- Make a bun. This is also a very elegant hairstyle.
Step 2. Remove the clips
Gently remove the clips to show off your new waves. If the hair is completely dry, it should stay in place.
- If you have rollers, take them off too.
- Don't comb your hair or the waves come undone.
Step 3. Spray hair spray
Make sure the hairstyle stays in place by using hairspray. Spray it on the front and sides.
Step 4. Add some 1930s touches
Put on your 1930s style make-up, and put on 1930s clothes. Your look is now complete.
