Are you ready to transform your hair into a pointed work of art? This article focuses on the classic Mohawk hairstyle (in Italy erroneously known as the Mohawk), a series of tips that run along the center line of the head, but many variations can be made starting from the basic model. Here's how to do your Mohawk hairstyle today. Give friends and family a hair-raising experience!
Steps
Step 1. Evaluate your options
The Mohawk style, and those related to it, encompasses a variety of shapes and lengths, so before making any cuts (and any gluing), you should have an idea of the look you want to achieve. You can tilt your hair or make a crest on one side, or you can cover all or part of your head with Statue of Liberty-like spikes. When it comes to getting a Mohawk suit, the sky is the only limit.
- Fan Mohawk: it is the most common, it shaves the whole head except for a central strip that runs from the nape to the forehead.
- Statue of Liberty: it is cut like the Fan, it is not very common but you can already notice someone who has this hairstyle.
- Deathhawk: created by the keyboardist of Specimen. You have to make a cut as in the case of the Fan.
- Dreadhawk: your hair must be a bit long in this case. Cut them like you would for a Fan but you either have to have the dreads first or you have to do them to the hair that is left over. Even if you can have a hairdresser do it, know that it costs a lot and is not a very punk thing. Consider growing your dreadlocks naturally instead (this will take a lot of care).
- CrossHawk: Little is seen, except in England. You have to shave all your hair except the space that goes from ear to ear. Especially girls wear it.
Step 2. View your Mohawk
Once you have figured out the result, the position you want it to be in and how tall you want it, do some testing to figure out how much hair you need to make it. Grab your hair and pull it up, style it to see how you will look or you can make a fake hawk, that is, a Mohawk without any trimming and shaving. You have to decide which hair to shave and which not. A rule of thumb for the Mohawk is to leave a simple strip of hair as wide as the space dividing your eyebrows or eyes. You can make this strip as wide as you want but remember, if it's too thin or too loose it will make things difficult when it comes to making the ridge stand straight.
Step 3. Plan the hairstyle
Wet your hair and then pat it dry with a towel to make it easier to manage. Part your hair on both sides of where the ridge will be. This will allow you to define a line to follow to shave unnecessary hair. If you want tips that don't follow a line and you want to shave the rest of your head, fix or knot the hair that will form the tips, so you can shave all around.
Step 4. Shave unnecessary hair
Use a hair clipper to shorten hair that won't be part of the Mohawk as much as you want. You can shave them completely for a hardcore look or leave them a little longer. If you are going to do an intricate spike design, you may need a beard trimmer or razor. Use two mirrors to see the back of your head as well. It is a complicated job so be patient and careful.
Step 5. Take a shower
Wash off any hair that you have shaved that is left on you.
Step 6. Dry them
They don't have to be damp otherwise the weight will cause the hair to collapse on itself.
Step 7. Grab a tuft you want to use to make a spike; if you do a fan-shaped Mohakw, take the first section of your hair (usually as big as it can fit in your hand) or, better yet, pull it up with a comb or brush
The brush allows you to grab even the small tufts that cross the ridge horizontally, which provides greater support for the hairstyle.
Step 8. Keep the tuft up but don't pull too hard
Step 9. Cotton
Use a fine-toothed comb and swipe it back and forth starting at the base of the tuft and working slowly. The hair should be able to stand straight on its own without the help of the hairspray. Remember, insert the comb, pull it towards the scalp and then remove the comb completely before repeating the operation.
Step 10. Spray the tuft along its entire length with hairspray starting at the base
Alternatively, use some very strong gel. Put the hairspray or gel as you like and then apply maniacally on the base of the tuft to strengthen it. You should use your free hand to distribute the product evenly especially if you are using a vaporized hairspray instead of the spray.
Step 11. Dry the tuft (while standing straight up) for about 20-30 seconds or until it is dry to the touch
The drier it will be, the better it will hold the hairstyle. It may be sticky but it will be fine if you dry it well.
Step 12. Repeat this process for each tip or section of the fan
If you are making a fan-shaped Mohawk make sure it is as even as possible. When it is dry you can use a comb to make it more tidy and compact. Apply another coat of hairspray after combing.
Step 13. Color your hair if you like
You can make your Mohawk or your Statue of Liberty spikes unique with a little color. There are endless possibilities.
Advice
- When you have to do the tips on the sides or back of the head, or you have to arrange the "fan" in the back, it may help to keep the hair a little higher than you would like, as it will fall a little downwards. especially if you haven't put enough lacquer on the base.
- Many people find it easier to style their fan-shaped Mohawk by resting one side of the ridge on a flat surface and drying and spraying them while in a horizontal position.
- Get someone to help you, especially in the shaving phase. It is difficult and ridiculous to be able to shave accurately with the help of mirrors.
- The Mohawk can be done with almost any hair length, but if you want to make a really tall one, you'll want to grow your hair first and then style the crest. The intense use of products to support the Mohawk can damage the hair and stop its growth temporarily, so do not make the crest and then wait for it to lengthen.
- As difficult as it may seem, once done, don't overdo it! There is a limit to how much gel you can put on before the hair collapses on itself and sags under its weight.
- Shave against the grain. It is easier this way to cut your hair.
- Experiment! You don't have to do the usual fan or the usual spikes, you can point only in front or only in back. You can start a new style that is much more "original" and "punk" instead of having hair like everyone else.
- Take special care of your hair. These hairstyles require the use of very aggressive products, so be sure to use a very delicate conditioner and shampoo for dyed hair. Cut split ends and don't pull up the crest every day.
- If you're not ready for a Mohawk, try making a fake one.
- Try using a straightener before and after applying lacquer and gel. This smoothes the hair and "seals" the hairstyle.
Warnings
- As the Mohawk gets longer, it takes more work to keep it upright and will not forgive any mistakes.
- If you keep the crest up for a long time and then wash your hair, be prepared for a large amount of hair falling out. This is completely normal, because the hair that falls out normally is kept glued to the others thanks to the gel, and when you wash it you lose it all at once.
