Probably, when you were a child, farting in a goliardic way among friends was really fun and earned you their sympathy, but now that you are an adult, it certainly does not help in social relationships nor does it encourage the opposite sex to meet you. If you hold the air, however, you may have some health problems, such as bloating, indigestion, and heartburn. It is a natural and necessary thing that happens to everyone on a daily basis. There is nothing to be ashamed of, but you can still resort to some methods that will help you minimize the smell and noise. Therefore, try to change your diet and daily habits to reduce the frequency of your need to break free.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Reduce Noise and Odor
Step 1. Break free slowly
Instead of expelling the gas quickly, possibly causing a loud noise, take your time and release slowly. Squeeze your abdominal muscles, inhale and exhale for a long time as you let the air out. The slow release should muffle the noise.
Step 2. Cough vigorously or make a loud noise
You can distract those around you by coughing or sneezing vigorously as you free yourself. By doing so, you have the possibility to cover the noise of the gaseous emission.
You may also divert the attention of nearby people by pretending to talk on their cell phones or by turning up the volume of the music in the room before letting out the air. With this expedient you can attenuate the noise that inevitably occurs in these cases
Step 3. Walk while you free yourself
Another solution is to expel the air as you move so that the sound and smell do not remain in your vicinity. This way you will no longer be there when someone notices the bad smell or sound and you will not have to take responsibility for it.
Try walking to an empty room or area in order to free yourself completely in the absence of other people, in order to avoid the embarrassment of such a gesture
Step 4. Walk away
Before you let go, get up and try to move to another area so you don't find yourself in a crowd or a group of people. You can go to another room and relax freely.
If you find yourself in a crowded train, for example, try to get into an empty car before expelling the air. If you are in an office full of people, walk into an empty hall or common area and free yourself so that no one is bothered by the noise or smell
Step 5. Spray an air freshener
You can mask the bad smell by spraying a deodorant or using a scented hand cream. After you are free, massage it into your hands so that the scent covers any stench that may linger in the air.
Method 2 of 3: Making Diet Changes to Decrease Flatulence
Step 1. Soak the beans before eating them to prevent flatulence
Everyone is well aware that eating beans can cause gas. You can reduce this effect by choosing dry ones to soak in water before cooking. Dried beans versus canned beans can also reduce bloating and gaseous emissions from consuming these legumes.
Change the water when you boil dry beans, the one used for soaking can produce more gas
Step 2. Consume fewer gas-producing fruits and vegetables
While essential for healthy eating and living, certain types of plant foods can cause excessive gas formation. You can reduce it by reducing your consumption of certain fruits and vegetables.
- Eat fewer apples, peaches, bananas, pears, apricots, and raisins. You should also avoid prune juice, as it can stimulate the intestines to produce more air.
- Eat fewer artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, green peppers, onions, radishes, celery, carrots, and cucumbers.
Step 3. Reduce your consumption of dairy products, including milk and cheese
Many dairy products can promote gas and bloating. Therefore, cut down on your consumption of dairy products like cheese, milk, and ice cream.
You should also avoid packaged foods that contain lactose, such as breads, cereals, and salad dressings
Step 4. Also reduce your consumption of sodas
They contain a high amount of gas which can increase the air in the intestine. Drink less sparkling water, carbonated fruit drinks, and consume more water to keep yourself hydrated.
You can decrease the amount of gas present in fizzy drinks by leaving them outside for a few hours without a lid, in order to reduce the carbon dioxide content
Step 5. Cut alcohol too
Alcohol, such as beer and wine, can cause bloating, indigestion, and flatulence. Beer, in particular, releases carbon dioxide during consumption, leading to an accumulation of this gas in the intestine and, consequently, to the production of air.
If you like spirits, such as beer and wine, sip them slowly and calmly. By drinking them leisurely, you will swallow less air and accumulate less gas inside the intestine
Method 3 of 3: Change Daily Habits to Decrease Flatulence
Step 1. Chew slowly
If you gulp down everything you eat, the amount of air you ingest increases with each bite and will build up in your belly, causing you to feel bloated later on. Therefore, do not be in a hurry and chew each bite at least 2-4 times before swallowing it. This will help your body digest the food you introduce properly and reduce the build-up of intestinal gas.
Step 2. Avoid chewing gum and candy
Although you may use chewing gum or candy after meals to freshen your breath, this habit can lead to bloating. Chewing gum and candy cause you to ingest more air, which turns into intestinal gas to be expelled.
Step 3. Cut down on smoking
Cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke can cause you to ingest larger amounts of air that build up in the intestines. Try to decrease your daily consumption of cigarettes or cigars to limit the problem of flatulence.
