Steps
Method 1 of 3: Prepare to Become a Police Officer
Step 1. Enter the public competition
The public competition to become a policeman is published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic - 4th special series "Competitions and Exams". This is a competition that is published based on the availability of places in the Corps.
Step 2. Meet the basic requirements
You can participate in the competition only if you meet the following requirements:
- Italian citizenship
- Enjoyment of political rights
- Age between 18 and 30 years
- Cultural, physical, mental fitness and aptitude for police service
- Middle School
- Not having been expelled from the Armed Forces or by militarily organized bodies or dismissed from public offices, nor dispensed from employment due to insufficient performance
- Do not have convictions for non-culpable crimes
- For candidates subject to conscription born before 1985, be in compliance with military service obligations and have not fulfilled military service obligations as conscientious objectors
- Be in possession of the moral and conduct qualities provided for by the law
Step 3. Prepare to take the exam
If you meet the aforementioned requirements and have been admitted to the competition, you must take a written test which consists of a synthetic or multiple choice questionnaire on topics of general knowledge.
- You will also have to answer questions in a foreign language (the language you have chosen from among those indicated in the call) and basic IT questions.
- The test is passed by obtaining a score of not less than 6/10.
Step 4. Undergo physical, mental and aptitude tests
If you have passed the written test, you will have to appear before a special commission that will assess your psycho-physical condition to issue you the eligibility. If the judgment is positive, you are admitted to the State Police as a student.
Step 5. Attend the training course
Once you have passed the competition, you will have to attend a training course lasting 6 months in one of the Police Schools present on the Italian territory.
- If you pass the training course, you become a probationary agent for a period of 6 months, after which you are appointed as an effective agent.
- Agents are initially assigned to a department in a region that is neither that of birth nor that of residence.
Method 2 of 3: Be Physically Ready
Step 1. Keep fit
Police officers must have quick reflexes, the ability to run long or short distances, and the strength to stop suspects. You will need to pass a physical agility test to qualify to become a policeman; therefore, start exercising right away to make sure you are in perfect physical shape.
Step 2. Start running
Take sprints to develop your strength and longer runs to increase endurance. In the examination phase, the minimum times for the race are different between women and men. In fact, women can cover 1000 meters in 4'55 while men in 4 '.
Step 3. Work on the reflexes
Run on a track and play dodgeball to develop a faster reaction time.
Step 4. Do some weight lifting to build muscle, which is essential for keeping fit
The physical prowess of aspiring police officers is assessed through running, high jump and pull-ups.
Step 5. Practice high jump
Also in this case the minimum limit for men (1.15 m) is different from that for women (1 m). The style of the jump does not matter, the important thing is to be agile and to exceed the bar. You will have 3 attempts.
Method 3 of 3: Be Psychologically Ready
Step 1. Be an honest citizen
Police officers should be role models within the community and it is never too late to start embodying the values you are tasked with passing on to others. Avoid using drugs, excessive alcohol use and any kind of crime. Such behavior will jeopardize your entry into the police.
During the general medical examination, to ascertain the healthy and robust constitution of the candidates, urinalysis will be carried out for the search for drugs and the observation of the clinical examinations of each aspirant
Step 2. Show that you have good communication skills
Consider that if you want to work as a policeman you will have to interact with the public and you will have to demonstrate that you know how to be with others. Those who are able to work in a team and those who show empathy are privileged.
Step 3. Show self-control
A good policeman should also be able to listen and manage their emotions, such as anger, fear, pain.
During the examination phase, the examining commission, also composed of psychologists, creates problem solving situations to observe the reaction of the candidates. Reacting with anger or closure in the face of a difficulty is not useful in any type of profession, especially for those who choose to put themselves at the service of the community
Step 4. Undergo psychological tests
In addition to the interview with the psychologist, you will need to undergo some tests.
- The mirror image test serves to establish the level of self-control and consists in the graphic reproduction of a mirror image.
- There are also psychosensory tests on visual memory, for example grids made up of numbers or letters which, once visualized, must be reproduced by the candidate to verify his intellectual capacity.
Advice
- Previous military experience will give you a good chance of success.
- Learn to type quickly on the computer, you will need it when you have to write a lot of reports.
- You will be able to work in different sectors: flying or 113, traffic police, railway police, maritime police, mobile department, NOCS - Central Operational Security Unit.
