Ducks are birds that tend to migrate to many continents. There are several types of ducks, which differ in color, size, appearance, body shape and beak. Ducks are typically attracted to small bodies of water near plants they feed on. There are many reasons to create a habitat capable of attracting them, whether for the pleasure of looking at them, hunting them, or simply to extend their natural environment. Here are some tips.
Steps
Step 1. Ducks are attracted to places with water, so create a small pond or find one where you might attract them
Step 2. Plant herbs that will grow tall near the water's edge and don't trim them
Ducks are attracted to places with a lot of grassy vegetation where they can blend in and protect themselves from predators.
Step 3. Create a food area to feed the ducks as they migrate
- Grow aquatic plants in and around the pond. Ducks feed on various aquatic plants and will tend to reside in areas where they are able to feed. Some examples of aquatic plants that ducks are fond of are the Zostere (plants belonging to the Zosteraceae family) and wild celery.
- Plant Bunting (Cyperus species), a herb that can be planted anywhere in or around a pond. It grows easily in a marshy environment and attracts ducks, which eat it. Bunting is a simple herb to plant because it doesn't require a lot of care. It requires no fertilizer once planted. Plant the bunting at a depth of 75 - 90 cm in your pond and this will prompt the ducks to dive.
- Create an environment with millet plants, reeds and tuber plants on the water's edge. When the plants mature and are flooded by a nearby pond, the ducks will be attracted when they are migrating.
- Place rice plants in the environment. Ducks are very attracted to rice, which also needs a humid environment to grow.
- Add the Japanese mile to the area, which is used by hunters to attract ducks. Millet should be planted in a dry area near the pond. It grows rapidly and reaches 60 - 120 cm when fully mature.
Step 4. Avoid the presence of other animals near the pond, and give the ducks space to make them feel comfortable
Ducks will not nest if other animals are close by, and they can also become defensive.
Step 5. Buy duck calls to put throughout your habitat; they will intrigue them enough to make them come and take a closer look
- Put some duck calls in shallow water where many species prefer to go.
- Place the lures near the water's edge next to the food area, so they are attracted to the lure and stay to feed.
- Do not put too many calls in the habitat and leave enough space for the ducks to rest on the ground; an area with a diameter of about 9 m should be sufficient.
