Having just one pigeon can strengthen your bond with him and with other birds you may purchase in the future, as well as, of course, saving money. Caring for just one pigeon is not for everyone as it requires a lot of time and attention, but thanks to this article you will learn the basic care.
Steps
Step 1. Think carefully
Since pigeons are social animals, having only one is only advisable if you are sure you can offer them the right time and company to keep them happy. Consequently, if you spend a lot of time indoors, a pigeon is the right choice for you.
Step 2. Buy your pigeon and research how to care for it
Before purchasing, do a thorough research on the animal's needs. Also, for safety reasons, spend time with him to make sure you are not allergic. When you feel ready, find a reputable breeder and ask him for advice on how to get the pigeon accustomed to his new home.
Step 3. Keep the pigeon indoors at first
For the first time, do not let the pigeon out to protect it from the cold and to strengthen your bond. For a young pigeon, get a large enough dog cage, put blankets or towels, water and food in it.
Step 4. Get the pigeon used to you
For the first few days, let the animal get comfortable - do not touch it, but talk to it frequently and stay close to the cage. When the bird feels comfortable, move on to the next step.
Step 5. Start bonding with him
Get him out of the cage, preferably in confined spaces, such as a small room. By letting it go out every day, the animal will feel calmer and over time you will be able to hold it in your hand. Make sure you pet him every day to get him used to it.
Step 6. Move the pigeon out
Pigeons can live indoors, but of course they like to be outside as well. If you intend to take other birds, it is advisable to build a fenced area to keep the animal, which can go outside when it is about one year old. The enclosure should have approximately the following dimensions: height 91 cm, width 91 cm and length 182 cm, and be secure enough not to allow access to other animals, such as cats, hawks, etc. Also set up some boxes that will serve as a nest if you catch other pigeons in the future (prepare about five). Clean the enclosure daily.
Continue to hold the pigeon in your hand daily
Step 7. Get a mate for your pigeon
Remember that pigeons are very sociable, so it is highly advisable to find a mate for them. Choose a pigeon of the same breed and let them meet before buying it (not all pigeons get along well). At this point, training and creating a bond with the newcomer will be easier because he will see how you behave with the other.
