The tiara is now a very popular accessory not only among brides, but also as an ornament for various formal occasions, such as student balls and gala evenings. There are some tricks on how to wear it: you just need to know how to choose the right model, how to wear it and with what.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Choosing a Tiara
Step 1. Consider what you will wear with the tiara
When choosing such an ornament you should also take into account the dress with which you will wear it. The tiara is meant to be an accessory, not to overpower your look. For example, if the dress you intend to wear has a crystal decoration, the ideal would be to choose a crystal tiara. If, on the other hand, it has a pearl decoration, the best complement would be a tiara of the same material.
- If you don't have to wear it with sophisticated clothing (for events such as a prom, a wedding or other important ceremony), choose one that is the focal point of your look.
- Make sure it matches the jewelry you're wearing, rather than contrasting it. For example, if you wear silver and diamond jewelry, choose a tiara made with the same materials.
Step 2. Take your hairstyle into consideration
Each hairstyle goes with a different type of tiara. For example, a small one is more suitable for collected hair than a large and long one.
Step 3. Choose a tiara that matches the shape of your face
Although there are no precise rules regarding the type of tiara to choose, some are more suitable than others: in principle it is better to choose one whose shape is the opposite of that of your face.
- If you have a heart-shaped face, choose a pointed one: it will help to give length to the face.
- If the face is elongated, opt for a rather low jewel that extends evenly along the entire top of the head, avoiding tall or pointed models.
- If the face shape is oval you can range between different models, preferably avoiding those with central points, as they can make the face appear longer.
- If you have a rounded face, opt for a slightly high or pointed tiara: it can help make it appear more elongated. Avoid rounded models instead.
Step 4. Purchase an oval rather than a round tiara
The head has the shape of an oval, therefore this model is able to encircle it perfectly, while a round-shaped one would risk leaving some points uncovered and tightening the skull.
Step 5. Choose one that is slightly prominent
If you place it on a flat surface, the front should protrude a little - it will help frame your face properly.
Step 6. Check that the size fits your head
A tiara that is too large could slip over your head: if necessary, tighten the two ends until they are the right size. Try to avoid tightening from the center, otherwise you could damage the tiara.
Make sure it's not too tight or it could cause a headache
Part 2 of 3: Choosing the right hairstyle and clothing
Step 1. Hide the ends of the tiara if you are going to wear your hair down
Usually loose and free hair looks too casual for a tiara, which is often associated with the idea of formality and royalty. If you choose to wear your hair in this way, arrange a few strands in front of the two ends of the accessory, to make it uniform better.
- Consider making your hair wavy or creating soft curls: they will add some movement and grace to your hairstyle.
- For a more casual look, consider wearing a simple floral tiara.
Step 2. Consider if you need to give the tiara some support
If you're going to wear it with your hair down, it won't have much of it. Try to braid or wrap a few strands of hair on both sides of the temples like cords and wrap them around the head. Secure them just above the ears with a bobby pin - when you wear the tiara the two ends should slip behind the intertwined locks.
Step 3. Try a gathered hairstyle for a classic look and maximum hold
You can collect your hair in a tight ballerina bun or in a softer and looser one, or try a ponytail or braid.
Add some volume to the ponytail by lifting a few strands at the top of the head to form a slight swelling
Step 4. Combine the tiara with formal wear
Accessories such as tiaras are most effective when paired with certain types of clothing. Just as it is not the case to combine a pair of sweatpants with an elegant shirt, a jewel like the tiara should not be combined with a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
Step 5. Wear it on formal occasions
As a synonym of royalty, the tiara is an accessory to be reserved for formal occasions: it is in fact too sophisticated to be worn every day.
Many girls still choose to wear it on their 16th or 21st birthday, to stand out and feel special
Part 3 of 3: Wear the Tiara
Step 1. Don't wash your hair
It may seem like unpleasant advice, however day-washed hair helps the tiara stay in place. If you have to wash them by force, avoid using conditioner: this will give the hair some texture and hold and will allow the tiara to stay still longer.
Step 2. First style your hair and apply the hairspray as well
If you apply it after wearing the tiara you will make the surface opaque and sticky.
Step 3. Gently slide it to the center of the garment
Try to position it slightly diagonally, so that the ends fit into the hair, rather than simply resting it on the top of the head: it will conform better to the hairstyle.
Step 4. Use some hair clips to secure the tiara
To make sure it doesn't slip off, use a few bobby pins, positioning them so they're hidden and won't interfere with the design of the tiara.
Step 5. Do not attach the veil to the tiara otherwise you will feel it being pulled backwards in a painful way
Instead, wear your accessory first, then pin the veil directly to your hair.
Advice
- Brides often turn to a hairdresser for their wedding day. If this is the case, talk to him in advance to make sure he is able to style your hair with the tiara and any other accessories you intend to use.
- Wear your tiara with pride.
