Rings can be worn in different ways depending on the look you choose, their size and the other accessories you want to wear. You can learn the main style rules for wearing rings correctly.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Measure the Rings
Step 1. Use a ring measuring device to find the right size for your ring
Ring sizes are plastic bands that show various sizes and that you can slide around your finger to find your exact size. They are available in every jewelry store.
The ring must adhere to the finger comfortably. It needs to be tight enough not to fall off, but also loose enough to slide over the knuckle
Step 2. Measure your fingers at the end of the day and when your hands are warm
The size of the fingers changes slightly depending on the time of day, what you did and the weather conditions. Fingers are thinner in the early morning and in cold weather.
- Try to measure your fingers a couple of times at different times of the day to make sure you get an accurate fit for your ring.
- Do not use threads or a tailor's tape measure to get the finger size, because the result could be inaccurate and you would end up buying a ring that doesn't fit well.
Step 3. Find your size
The following measurements are relative to the diameter of the finger. If, after using a size ring, you find that two sizes fit you, always opt for the larger one. This way you will make sure you have a little more space and the ring will fit well. The most common size for women is 6, while for men it is 9.
- Size 5 - 15.7 mm.
- Size 6 - 16.5 mm.
- Size 7 - 17.3 mm.
- Size 8 - 18.2 mm.
- Size 9 - 18.9 mm.
- Size 10 - 19.8 mm.
- Size 11 - 20, 6 mm.
- Size 12 - 21.3 mm.
- Size 13 - 22.2 mm.
Step 4. Have the ring size adjusted if it doesn't suit you
Professional goldsmiths or jewelers can widen most of the rings which over time may become tight. Often you can get your size adjusted for free by going to the same place you bought them.
Milgrain or tungsten style rings usually cannot be widened or tightened
Part 2 of 3: Picking a Finger
Step 1. Wear the rings on one hand or the other
Traditionally, wedding and engagement rings are worn on the left hand in Western countries, but some Eastern Orthodox populations choose to wear the wedding band on the right hand. In general, however, the rings can be worn on both hands and the symbolism in this regard is always very varied.
According to some, the right hand represents active life, expressing work and resolve, while the left symbolizes emotions, beliefs and character
Step 2. Put the statement rings on your little finger
In astrology and palmistry the little finger represents the persuasive character or belief in general, but it is also simply a free finger on which a ring could fit well. Sometimes a ring on the little finger can look fun and casual, especially if it's wide-banded.
Step 3. Wear smaller bands on your middle finger
The middle finger is usually less common as a finger to wear rings on, because it often interferes with the ability to use the hand. If you choose to wear a ring on your middle finger, make sure it's a small, thin band.
For some it can be problematic to wear a ring on the middle finger because it could be used for vulgar gestures. Therefore, drawing attention to that finger in some cases may be inappropriate
Step 4. Put on the wedding and engagement rings on the ring finger
In most Western countries, wedding rings and the like are usually worn on the ring finger, usually the left one. If you are afraid of giving people the wrong impression, but you still like to wear rings on your ring finger, opt for the right one.
Step 5. Wear large, showy rings on your index finger or thumb
The index and thumb are surprisingly comfortable fingers on which to wear rings. Once the royal coats of arms and other large stones were worn on the index finger to attract attention. Wearing a ring on the index finger or thumb can convey a strong message. For some cultures it is a symbol of well-being.
Part 3 of 3: Wear the Rings
Step 1. Match the ring to the clothes
Rings should be used to emphasize the color scheme and level of formality of the clothes you are wearing. It is also good to wear rings of the same color as necklaces, bracelets, earrings or any other jewelry you wear.
- If you are wearing a silver necklace and earrings, for example, you will not be wearing yellow gold rings.
- Choose which rings are suitable based on the style of your clothing, what other jewelry you wear and how the rings can be combined.
Step 2. Wear cocktail or statement rings as a formal element
Such rings are larger and more showy than ordinary ones. They should be worn alone, not combined with other rings.
Wedding or engagement rings usually have a "formal" look, but many fashion experts agree that they can be worn with any other ring. Most gemstone rings should only be used in elegant settings
Step 3. Wear plain rings as a complement to other accessories
Sashes are casual, but they can also be considered formal. Always suitable, these rings are in plain or decorated metal and can be worn together with other rings, on the same hand.
Step 4. Wear the modular rings with others of the same style
Modular rings are a recent trend, where several rings are stacked on the same finger to create an ensemble effect. The versions with precious stones should not be mixed with rings on the other fingers, while the casual versions can be mixed.
Step 5. Space the rings on your hands
It is not okay to wear too many rings all together or to wear too many on the same hand. Maintain the right balance without wearing three rings all on one hand and none on the other.
- Plus, space the rings between your fingers. If you don't usually wear rings, try wearing just one for a while as a discreet accessory.
- Those who prefer a more minimalist style can stack multiple rings on both hands without going overboard. For example, a stylish and tasteful match is a plain silver band next to a thin medium silver ring worn on the first knuckle.
Step 6. Maintain the balance between larger rings and others in a statement style
Those who choose to wear larger rings, such as cocktail rings, should keep their balance by choosing a statement style model and wear it alone or combined with other less showy and more sober jewels.
Mixing materials is certainly possible, but sticking to only two shades at a time is the safest choice. Wearing rings of yellow, rose gold, silver and brass all together gives a messy look
Step 7. Choose the rings that suit your personal style
If you like a bold look, go for something bigger and more eye-catching. If you prefer a more minimalist style and like simple lines, choose smaller, more discreet rings. Remember, there is no wrong way to wear a ring.
Advice
- Buy rings that feel comfortable and that you can combine with any outfit.
- Do not buy rings made of poor materials - they break easily.
