In a woman's wardrobe, sweaters can certainly not be missing. There are different types: the lighter ones, to be worn in spring and autumn, and the heavy ones, essential in winter. You can layer them on a dress, pair them with jeans or other trousers and enrich the combination with a pair of boots, a belt and a leather jacket.
This article offers advice aimed at women's clothing, but men can also get some ideas.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Matching the Sweaters in Fall and Winter
Step 1. Buy a sweater that is at least one size larger
There are so many ways to make this piece of clothing cute, and it's a practical and comfortable choice in fall and winter. You will feel pampered and warm and your look will be fantastic.
- Add a belt to shape it and create a more feminine style. You can use a thin one, covering it with the folds of the sweater itself, or a large one. Use it to wrap around the waist, so the result will be harmonious.
- Pair this sweater with leggings and boots. They are undoubtedly a great choice in autumn and winter. If the sweater has geometry, choose plain leggings, and vice versa, otherwise the final look will be too loaded.
Step 2. Put on original leggings or stockings
Cold seasons always come with a gray cape, so a pair of colorful leggings or socks can liven up this outfit. You can combine them with a long sweater or dress-like.
- Geometry leggings are ideal for plain, monochromatic sweaters. For example, you could combine a pair of leggings inspired by a Monet painting (with references to purple, green and yellow) with a black or gray sweater (if you want to be a little more daring, choose a long and green one.).
- The leggings and stockings, both bright and solid, are perfect in autumn and winter. For example, you could combine a pair of lime green socks with a sweater with a delicate geometry (better if it has hints that recall this shade of green).
Step 3. Match the sweater with a pair of jeans
Incredibly versatile jeans are the perfect match for a sweater. Plus, they allow you to create an autumn or winter outfit in a second. There are different types of jeans and sweaters, so the looks you can create are varied:
- Ripped or pierced and rolled up jeans look great with a sweater that is at least one size larger or with braids. It's a perfect look for a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon.
- Pair simple jeans with a ruby red or emerald green V-neck sweater or cardigan. To make the look more elegant, first put on a shirt. It is ideal for an afternoon walk on the carpet of fallen leaves in autumn.
- Since there are different types of sweaters and jeans, you can create multiple looks. You could wear a classy shirt and cardigan or a casual V-neck sweater paired with ripped jeans. The possibilities are actually almost limitless.
Step 4. Add a shirt
There are few garments that have the same elegance as a shirt. Pair it with a ruby red or emerald green V-neck sweater. The collar should come out completely.
You can make this look less formal with a pair of jeans, or wear classic dark pants
Step 5. Pair the sweater with a leather jacket
This pairing is also a winner: whatever sweater you choose, it will be highlighted by the nail, but a turtleneck is particularly apt.
Choose a dark sweater and add a long necklace to enrich the look
Step 6. Complete with accessories
You can add several to make an outfit of this type more interesting. Jewelery and trinkets always come to your rescue: a chunky necklace paired with a V-neck sweater highlights the look in its entirety, while a pair of pendants paired with a cable sweater gives you a touch of light.
- Scarves are an essential accessory, and then they keep you warm and pamper you in the colder seasons.
- Boots also look good with sweaters, whether they're one size up, elegant, plain or a dress. They add a touch of class to any outfit and keep your legs warm!
Part 2 of 3: Matching Sweaters in Spring and Summer
Step 1. Choose the right fabric
If you want to wear a sweater in spring and summer, you shouldn't choose a material that will make you feel warm, like cashmere. You have to opt for a lightweight fabric that allows the skin to breathe.
- As for the fabric, choose a silk blend, cotton or nylon / polyester blend. They allow the skin to breathe more easily and offer the right heaviness and warmth (especially in offices with the air conditioning on) without suffocating you.
- A loose, crocheted sweater is ideal for a summer or spring look. Wear it over a maxi dress or a light-colored t-shirt and rolled-up jeans.
Step 2. Choose light colors, summer or spring
Sweaters with deep colors or heavy black ones are perfect in the fall, but definitely not for you in the spring and summer. Opt for light shades and prints of the same type (pastel colors, such as pink or blue, are quite common).
- Gray can easily be paired with fresh, summer print skirts. In this way, the attention is drawn to the liveliest fabric, and the gray stands out, does not turn it off.
- Light colors, such as pastels, are preferable, because they are not as intense as black or dark purple.
Step 3. Combine the sweater with a summer skirt or trousers
To be able to create a fresh look, you need to choose light clothing. For example, combine a crocheted sweater with a sporty, brightly colored mini skirt.
- Another good idea is to combine an open white sweater with loose cotton pants and white sandals.
- You could also combine a light, fitted V-neck sweater with a loose, knee-length skirt to balance the width of the bottom with the snug fit of the top.
Step 4. Try to dress in layers
Sweaters offer many benefits, including the ability to create layers. Dressing like this is necessary to always be ready for sudden changes in temperature, which can occur in both spring and summer.
- Wear a top and add a summer sweater to look perfect from morning to night.
- When you wear a cardigan, you can leave it completely or almost unbuttoned. In this way, the underlying layer is visible and you can softly bandage the hips.
Part 3 of 3: Avoiding False Steps
Step 1. Avoid Christmas-themed sweaters
As much as you think it's a good idea to wear one for a laugh or because otherwise your grandmother will be upset, these sweaters do not look good on practically anyone.
Really, the only reason you should wear such a sweater is to go to a themed party (and when it ends, the ugliest will be elected)
Step 2. Try to avoid sweaters that are filled with fluff dots
It is not easy to follow this advice, in fact it is rather difficult to understand if a sweater is subject to the formation of dots. However, there are factors you can look at when choosing ones that won't look very old after being barely worn twice.
- Read the label on the sweater in question. Merino wool, for example, tends to be more durable and less prone to pitting than cashmere, which is thinner.
- You should also pay attention to the length of the fiber used to make the sweater, especially if it is a natural, unprocessed fabric, such as cashmere. Longer fibers can be wrapped around a yarn in a more snug way, so the ends are less likely to loosen (and this is what causes the dots to appear).
- You should let the sweater “rest” for 24 hours before you can put it on again, as this allows the fibers to recover their shape following the stretch caused when worn.
Step 3. Choose the right sweater for you
Buy the ones that value you and make you feel comfortable. Not all turtlenecks, short sweaters or those of a larger size are suitable.
- Try to avoid following sweaters trends closely. For example, if shrugs are in fashion this season and you buy 10, but then the following season they are replaced by long cardigans, you will end up with a pile of clothes that you probably won't wear in the near future.
- Also pay attention to colors. That beautiful mustard color looks great on the mannequin, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will flatter you too (by the way, there are colors that are particularly difficult to wear, like yellow).
Step 4. Avoid the country club look
Putting a sweater over your shoulders and tying it in front (especially if it's a pastel-colored cardigan) will make you look like you've stepped out of a country club, or yacht club. Unless this is the result you aspire to, better leave it alone.
