Coconut oil is a great natural treatment, effective for strengthening the shaft, fighting dandruff and polishing the hair. However, being thick and greasy, it is sometimes difficult to remove it using only water and shampoo. To get rid of excess oil, try a powdery solution, such as dry shampoo, cornstarch, or baby powder without talc. You can also make a face mask made from beaten egg, lemon juice, or baking soda. Once rinsed, these solutions should also remove the coconut oil, leaving the hair clean and hydrated.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Rinse your hair with a natural solution
Step 1. Remove the oil from your hair using the citric acid in lemon juice
Squeeze the juice from 2 fresh lemons into a bowl, then add 250ml of water. Pour the solution into your hair and scalp, leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. This should remove the excess oil.
You can also add a few tablespoons of honey to soften the hair
Step 2. Add 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel to your usual shampoo
Massage the mixture into your hair and scalp until you get a thick foam. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse. Aloe and shampoo should remove the oily residue.
Step 3. Use beaten eggs to get rid of excess oil and make a protein treatment, effective for even healthier hair
Beat 2 or 3 eggs in a bowl. Add 950ml of water and mix until smooth. Pour it on dry hair and massage it. Let the egg sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. At the end of the rinse, you should have eliminated the excess grease.
Do not rinse the beaten egg using hot or lukewarm water, otherwise the eggs will literally be cooked on the hair. Make sure the water is cold to avoid this
Step 4. Make a baking soda paste for the scalp
Mix 1 or 2 tablespoons (7-15 g) of baking soda with enough water to form a thick paste. Apply it to the roots and scalp when the hair is dry. Focus on areas that are particularly oily, such as the top of the head. Cover oily areas well, rinse with warm water. The rinsing should be quick enough, allowing you to get rid of excess oil very easily.
- Do not massage the paste on the lengths: focus only on the scalp.
- The baking soda will bond with the coconut oil, but it won't adhere to the hair.
Method 2 of 2: Use a No-Rinse Powder Solution
Step 1. Absorb the oil with a dry shampoo or powder product
Whether in spray or powder form, dry shampoo is perfect for refreshing your hair and getting rid of excess oil.
- If you prefer a more natural solution, you can also use cornstarch, baking soda, maranta starch, or baby powder without talc.
- Avoid products containing talc, as it has been associated with serious medical conditions.
Step 2. Apply the powder to the roots
Sprinkle the product on the crown of the head when the hair is completely dry. Start with a small amount and add more as needed, up to 1 tsp. Focus on the roots - this is the area that tends to be the most greasy.
Do not use more than a teaspoon of dry shampoo, or it will dry out the scalp
Step 3. Comb your hair to make the powder absorb the oil
Continue to comb to distribute it well and achieve the desired shine. If you have dark hair, light powders can leave behind residues or white spots.
To get rid of the whitish residue, create a good lather with a liquid shampoo and rinse your hair
Advice
- You can also use a clarifying shampoo, specific to eliminate excess sebum.
- Rinsing should always be done with warm or hot water (unless you use beaten egg). Cold water can cause coconut oil to solidify. As it hardens on the hair, it will be much more difficult to get rid of.
- Remember that it is enough to use just a little oil. Start with a small amount and add more as needed. This way, it will be much easier to rinse off.
