Popping chewing gum makes a sound similar to popping a balloon and popping it, but in this case the gum stays in your mouth. There are a couple of different ways to produce this sound. Once you've figured out which way is best for you, you can practice popping the gum continuously as you chew it.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Pop the Rubber

Step 1. Chew the gum for a couple of minutes

Any type of chewing gum will do. Chew a piece of gum until it completely softens and becomes pliable.

Sugar-free gums have a different texture than sugar-containing gums, so you may want to try both types to see which one you are best with

Step 2. Flatten the gum by holding it in your mouth

Press it with your tongue against the upper palate until a flat, compact disc or rectangle forms.

There are a couple of different methods for flattening the gum. All the methods used to make the balloon should work, but be careful to stop before the gum is fully stretched

Step 3. Keep the gum pulled between the upper lip and the back of the lower incisors

With your tongue, push the gum up and place it behind the upper lip (in front of the upper incisors). Fit a flap of the rubber piece firmly here. Push the other flap behind your lower incisors, inside your mouth. The rubber must remain whole, without tearing.

Instead, some put the lower edge of the gum in front of the lower incisors (and not behind) or in the middle of the mouth

Step 4. Take in the air with your mouth

Squint your mouth, leaving a gap between your lips. Suck briefly but hard: as a consequence, a piece of rubber should move back towards the inside of the mouth, making a noise.

Some practice may be required to achieve this. Even after learning how to do it, you may not always succeed

Method 2 of 2: Smack the gum while chewing it

Step 1. Make the balloon with the gum

Flatten it into a disk shape, exactly as you would using the standard method (described above). Insert the tongue into the disk without breaking it, then withdraw the tongue and join the edges to seal the balloon. Chew the balloon to pop it and to produce the pop.

It may be helpful to blow into the balloon as you stick your tongue into it

Step 2. Alternatively, you can give the gum the shape of a dumpling

Others, on the other hand, are better off folding the rubber in half. Overlap the two flaps, sealing the edges and ends with your teeth and mouth. If you can do this correctly, you will end up with an air "dumpling" that bursts just like a normal balloon.

Step 3. Practice consistently

If you want to pop it continuously while chewing gum, you need to practice practicing at least one of the two steps described above before you are able to do it quickly or even unconsciously. Once you have mastered the larger movements, you can try to make smaller and smaller balloons until you are able to form them by simply folding the gum and chewing it. Chewing too hard or too softly prevents air bubbles from forming and popping, so you'll need to practice a little before you can produce a nice steady series of pops.

Advice

  • Soak the gum in water for a moment to soften it - it may make it easier to snap. But be careful: some types of rubber may melt in contact with water, so this advice does not apply in all cases.
  • It is possible to do a series of snaps one after the other, but you have to practice a lot. If you want to give it a try, put more gum behind your upper lip than usual.
