Cracklè is a very widespread aging technique used to decorate the surface of the most varied objects. By applying a layer of glue, or medium cracking, between 2 layers of acrylic paint it is possible to give a surface a completely new and different appearance.
Steps
Step 1. Choose the object you want to paint
The crackle technique can be applied to wood, ceramic, canvas and various other surfaces.
-
If you have chosen a wooden object, make sure it is treated, otherwise you may get a faded result.
Step 2. Choose two contrasting colors
It is not important to roll out one or the other first. The crackle effect will be visible in both cases: light on dark, or dark on light.
- If you prefer, use metallic paints to make your object shine.
-
Note: if the two colors chosen are too similar to each other, the crackle effect may not be evident.
Step 3. Spread the first layer of paint
Use a brush, or a small roller, and paint the object with acrylic paint.
- Color in every visible part.
-
Before proceeding any further, wait for the paint to dry completely.
Step 4. Cover the first layer with clear all-purpose glue or cracking medium
Check with your local hobby store for advice, or use plain vinyl glue. Remember that the thicker the layer of glue, the larger the lines of the crackle effect will be.
-
If you want to get fine lines then spread a thin layer of glue.
Step 5. Immediately apply the last color
The cracking medium dries very quickly, so it will be necessary to proceed immediately with the application of the second color. Otherwise the crackle effect will not be effective. Apply the new color with a soft brush.
-
Be gentle so as not to scatter and drag the glue underneath as you paint, otherwise you will ruin the final effect. If you prefer to use a spray paint, the application process will be much faster.
Step 6. Wait for your item to dry completely
Cracks will appear as soon as the last color has dried.
- If you want to speed up drying times you can use a hot air gun.
-
Complete your project by applying a layer of clear polyurethane paint.
Advice
- For larger projects it may be useful to work in different sections so that the glue does not have time to dry before the second color is applied.
- The type of tool used to apply the second color will determine the crack pattern. Using a brush you will get parallel lines, with a roller the cracks will have a more circular appearance.
