Halloween is the perfect time of year for a garland on the door. Whether you want one that screams Halloween or just celebrates fall, there are great ways to make a front door wreath in this article.
Steps
Method 1 of 6: Pumpkin Garland
Step 1. Purchase baby pumpkins
Choose them that they are in excellent condition with orange and yellow shades.
Step 2. Arrange them in a circle to see how many you will need to use
You will need about 14-20, depending on how big they are.
Step 3. Make a hole horizontally in each pumpkin
Keep each hole near the end of the pumpkin so you can hide it when the wreath is hanging.
Step 4. Pass 20 gauge wire through the hole in the first pumpkin
Arrange it against the shape of the wreath and twist the yarn so the pumpkin doesn't move.
Step 5. Repeat for each pumpkin until they are all attached to the shape
Step 6. Put some dry moss in the spaces between the pumpkins
Stop it with more wire.
Step 7. Tie a nice bow on top of the garland leaving the long tails dangling
Cuts diagonally to prevent fraying.
Step 8. Hang a hook on top of the wreath
Place it on the door.
Method 2 of 6: Orange and Black Garland
Step 1. Choose tulle or jute for this project
Both will be fine although it will take some work.
- Choose orange and black.
- Use 90cm of each fabric for a standard shape.
Step 2. Cut strips
Make it 10cm and 1.5cm.
Step 3. Tie lots of black strips on the garland
Then tie the orange ones. Check that there is enough space for each color to stand out.
Step 4. Continue to tie the strips alternating the colors
Be generous: the more swollen it is, the better it will be.
Step 5. Add decorations
What you put in will be up to you but some suggestions are:
- Halloween themed wood cutouts, tied with ribbon or glued on
- Orange and black ribbon bows
- Glued Halloween themed paper cutouts
- Orange and black artificial flowers.
Step 6. Tie a loop on top to hang your garland
Step 7. Done
Hang it on the door.
Method 3 of 6: Orange Felt Rose Wreath
Step 1. Choose some orange felt
Take large pieces of it as you will cut circles. You can find it in fabric and DIY stores. The shape of the wreath must be natural, for example of branches. See if the shop where you buy supplies have those made of intertwined branches.
You can use other fabric instead of felt. For a tutorial on how to make roses see How to Make Fabric Roses
Step 2. Design the wreath
Knowing the drawing in advance will help determine how many roses you will need. You have the choice of putting the roses together or arranging them scattered but evenly around the wreath. The choice will depend on the type of garland you want (the ugly ones will have to be covered, while the prettier shapes can become part of the set up). It will also depend on how much time and energy you want to spend on making the roses.
If you decide to arrange them spaced, you can also add some felt leaves made with golden colors. In this way the design will be more "fluid"
Step 3. Turn the felt into circles
They don't have to be perfect so work freehand.
The size of the circles depends on how wide you want the roses. 10 to 25cm is recommended
Step 4. Create a spiral
Cut each circle of felt in a spiral; start on one side and cut it in a spiral in the center of the circle. It should look like a snake when done. The more sizes the better.
Step 5. Roll up and stop the spiral
This step creates the first rose.
- Start at the outer edge of the spiral and roll inward.
- While you work, hold the spiral at the base steady, you will form the back of the rose.
- Once done, the spiral will resemble a rose. It will have to be stopped so turn it over and sew the back; use a few stitches to be comfortable, then tie a knot and trim the excess thread.
Step 6. Repeat for the remaining roses
You will need a lot of them to cover the wreath so rest and start over. Or get help!
Step 7. Attach the roses to the wreath
There are two ways to do this:
- 1. Hot glue. You will have to hold each rose steady until nan takes. It is best to squeeze the base of the flower to give a surface to attach to the glue.
- 2. Points. This only works if the wreath is natural maternal and requires patience as you will have to move it along with the felt base.
Step 8. Attach a long bow of ribbon at the top
Simply tie it around the top.
Step 9. Attach a piece of string or ribbon in a circle and hang
Step 10. Attach the wreath to the wall or behind a glass door
Felt fears water so don't hang it outside unless you are sure it won't rain.
Method 4 of 6: Sweet Corn Wreath
Step 1. Paint the wreath black
Let it dry.
Step 2. Apply a coat of homemade glue
This way you waterproof it.
Step 3. Hot glue a circle of sweet corn around the outer edge of the shape
Arrange the grains in the same way and leave no gaps.
Step 4. Go back to the opposite side by gluing the corn in rows that form a circle
Complete the whole circle.
There will be holes in the rows: don't worry, the black will still stand out
Step 5. Repeat
Alternate the direction of the rows for the corn until you gradually reach the center of the wreath.
Step 6. Apply a coat of homemade glue again to seal
Let it dry.
Step 7. Glue a decoration to the base or top
This part is optional but adds an extra touch. Some ideas:
- Black ribbon bows.
- Black paper or artificial flowers with gems in the center.
- A black cat, a witch or a broom.
- Whatever you like.
Step 8. Tie a string or twine at the top to hang it on the door
A double ring will help keep it straight.
Step 9. Done
Method 5 of 6: Pom Poms Garland
This is an easy but impressive wreath.
Step 1. Choose what colors you want to make the pom poms
You can use both black and orange or both mixed.
Step 2. Decide on the size of the garland
The large ones will make a large garland, the small ones obviously a small garland. It will depend on how much yarn you have and how much space.
Step 3. Make pom poms of the chosen color.
Step 4. Attach them to the garland
Use hot glue to attach them to the shape. Keep them close and don't crush them.
Step 5. Consider if you need anything more
The wreath can be hung just what it is or you can add some themed decoration like a black cat, a witch or a big black bow.
Step 6. Add a hook
Step 7. Hang your wreath on the front door or wherever you want
It's okay even if the weather is humid but over time the thread gets soaked and goes limp. Remember this when choosing where to hang it
Method 6 of 6: Glow in the Dark Ball Garland
This phosphorescent ball garland glows in the dark. It takes a little more work to push the pins into the balls and it takes strength. If it's too hard, use very strong glue to hold them in place, making sure it dries before moving on to the next ball.
Step 1. Wrap the garland
Run the black festoon around and around until you have covered the entire shape of the wreath. Secure with glue.
Alternatively, paint in black or a glow-in-the-dark color
Step 2. Put a thimble on one finger
That way you won't get hurt!
Step 3. Make a hole in the back of a glow-in-the-dark ball
Push the head of a pin into the hole you just made. Push it in halfway.
Do this for all the balls. Take a break often, it's hard work
Step 4. Push the pointed end of the pin into the wreath shape
Repeat adding each ball next to the last one always following the same direction.
Step 5. Before doing the "top" part attach a hook
Use black tape or something similar to make a solid attack. Then add the remaining balls on this part of the wreath.
Step 6. Stick it on the front door
Put a black light nearby to help it shine on Halloween night.

Advice
- If you like sprites, read How to Make a Halloween Wreath with Goblins.
- With a nod to the sweet side of Halloween, this candy garland uses all the treats you have on hand. When you're done trick-or-treating, you can nibble on your wreath or give what's left to the last patron of the evening!
Warnings
- Keep small parts away from children and animals.
- If the wreath is not waterproof, hanging it on the front door could destroy it. In some cases it is better to apply a coat of spray sealant to protect them: ask the hardware store about this.
