To add a small light source to your garage or small shed, consider building a small solar light bulb with a bottle yourself. It cannot be considered a solution for the home because in the long run it could ruin the ceiling structure and allow the entry of external elements. However, if you want to light up a temporary construction or a children's playhouse, a solar bottle is for you.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Determine the Location
Step 1. Decide which area of the house / room is the best place to install the bottle
Consider which space you spend the most time and where more light is needed.
Step 2. Identify weak areas of the structure where drilling the ceiling could cause sagging and other problems
You can refer to the project, or scour the whole room to find out which areas cannot be compromised.
Step 3. Consider installing multiple solar bottles
Usually, transparent two-liter bottles are used (such as soft drinks), so do an evaluation of the available spaces.
Part 2 of 3: Prepare the Necessary
Step 1. Collect plastic bottles, such as soda bottles
Remove the labels and carefully wash both the inside and the outside. Keep the cap.
Step 2. Purchase one liter of distilled water and one liter of bleach
The water attracts sunlight and the bleach prevents the formation of algae inside the bottle.
Step 3. Purchase industrial sealants as you will need to secure the bottle to a sheet of metal
Step 4. Purchase a sheet of metal that is large enough to hold the bottle and can rest on the ceiling
Get a hacksaw as well.
Part 3 of 3: Designing the Solar Bottle
Step 1. Measure the circumference of the bottle at 2/3 of its length and write the measurements on the ceiling structure
-
Drill a hole in the roof with the hacksaw.
Step 2. Transfer the same measurements to the metal sheet
Draw a circle that is the diameter of the bottle and then draw a large square around the circle.
-
Cut out the square and circle from the metal. Try inserting the bottle into the hole. If the measurements are correct and the bottle fits snugly, then it will dangle about 2/3 of its length from the metal sheet.
Step 3. Fill the bottle almost completely with distilled water
Don't overdo it because you'll have to put in bleach too.
Step 4. Finish filling the bottle with bleach (approximately 45ml)
Wait for the product to distribute well in the water but do not shake the bottle.
Step 5. Put the cap on and close the container tightly
Step 6. Slide the bottle into the metal sheet and seal the edge all around it
Don't skimp on the sealant, you need to prevent rain or other elements from entering the room through the cracks.
Step 7. Drop the bottle into the hole in the roof and let the sheet of metal support it
-
If possible, add some sealant to adhere the metal to the roof.
