A soccer ball is fun to use, but it may not be easy to draw. The traditional one is made up of two two-dimensional shapes: pentagons and hexagons. A pentagon, of course, is a polygon with five sides, while a hexagon has six. The instructions in this article will help you understand what a soccer ball looks like so you can draw it.

Steps

01 Draw a large circle Step 01

Step 1. Draw a large circle

This is the shape of the ball.

02 Draw a pentagon off center in the circle Step 02

Step 2. Draw a pentagon, not in the center, in the ball

This will be your reference form. It should be about 1/8 of the circle in size.

Step 3. Make sure the polygons inside the circle are regular

They have to be inscribable, you don't have to draw them simply by going from A to B.

04 Draw lines from each point on the pentagon by drawing them towards the circumference of the circle. Step 04 1

Step 4. Draw lines from each vertex of the pentagon to the circumference

05 Add V shapes outwards from the lines Step 05

Step 5. Add "Vs" that extend outward from each line

Open them about 135 degrees.

06 Connect the points of the V_'s to make hexagons Step 06

Step 6. Connect the points of the Vs to form hexagons

There should be five of them and they should be slightly larger than the starting pentagon.

07 Finish the outer pentagons by drawing 135 degree angle lines going outwards from the top two points on each hexagon. Step 07

Step 7. Finally, draw pentagons by sending 135 degree angled lines from the two outermost vertices of each hex

Step 8. Fill in the pentagons

Use the color you want. Black is the best. All done!

Advice

  • Draw large figures. The small ones will look unreal and out of place.
  • It will take you a couple of tries to succeed, as it is not mathematically possible to draw a perfect soccer ball.
  • It is really stressful trying to draw a perfect ball. Remember to take your time and take deep breaths from time to time.
  • Freehand sketch the lines first, for a better and more realistic result.
  • Classic soccer balls have black pentagons and white hexagons, but if you want a unique result you can swap them or use other colors.

Warnings

  • Don't use a heavy stroke at first, just make a sketch. After you are done you can go over the lines.
  • Avoid drawing shapes that are too small; they should occupy a large part of the surface of the balloon.
  • Be careful not to smudge the lines.
  • If you are done and the drawing looks very wrong to you, try again!
