For some people, using a lighter can be a complicated operation. This tutorial shows some useful tips to light a lighter, both in the presence of a manual problem, and in case of inexperience with this tool.
Steps
Step 1. Hold the lighter using your dominant hand
Make sure that the red button on the top of the lighter is facing outwards and not towards you
Step 2. Place your thumb on the small cogwheel, slightly offset towards the red button
Step 3. Press your thumb down, not sideways
Remember that the key to lighting a lighter is to use the right speed and angle.
Step 4. If you are still unable to operate your lighter, press harder on the sprocket, slightly reducing the distance between your thumb and the red button
In this way the force applied to the thumb will drive the cogwheel and, almost at the same time, cause the finger to press the red button.
Advice
- The most common mistake is the lack of speed in performing the movement with the thumb. Hold the lighter with the four fingers of your hand, as if you were clenching your fist on a stress ball, and make the movement only with your thumb. Keep your hand steady and your grip firm.
- The small cogwheel is the component that generates the sparks, while the red button, when pressed, frees the flow of gas. Now that you know how the components of a lighter work, you are able to execute the ignition movement with the right timing and the right naturalness.
- Make sure you press the red button in a single, smooth motion, without interruption, because pressing it once or twice without first spinning the small cogwheel will not produce any results. Many people make this kind of mistake when trying to operate a lighter.
Warnings
- Always practice in a safe place and never leave your lighter near heat sources or highly flammable materials.
- If your thumb starts to ache, take a break and then try again.
