A Komboloi is the traditional Greek rosary, used to relieve stress and, more generally, to pass the time. Creating your own komboloi for fun, or to relieve tension, will require the use of a few simple and inexpensive items. Follow the tutorial in detail!
Steps
Step 1. Purchase or create your own beads
Traditionally, komboloi is made up of an odd number of beads, usually one added to a multiple of four, 5, 9, 13, etc. Additionally, you will need to add a "shield" bead, usually slightly larger than the others. Natural materials such as stone, amber and wood are considered more pleasant to handle, however you can use whatever you prefer.
Step 2. Get or make a tassel
(Optional)
Step 3. Shape the cordage
Normally, the length of the komboloi corresponds to the width of two hands, so cut the string giving it the length of at least 4 hands, plus an extra space to attach the shield and tassel.
Step 4. Thread the smaller beads
Step 5. Thread both ends of the string inside the shield bead
Step 6. Tie a knot to secure all the beads
A simple knot will suffice as long as its diameter is greater than that of the hole in the shield bead. If the chosen rope is very thin it will be necessary to make multiple knots.
Step 7. Attach the tassel (if desired)
Step 8. Play around with your new komboloi to relieve stress
Advice
- Use a smooth, sturdy piece of cordage to allow the beads to flow freely.
- Use beads with no sharp ends to avoid injury or injury when using komboloi.
