A wine hangover isn't pleasant at all. While there is no surefire way to get rid of it completely, there are several ways you can try to feel better and be able to get out of bed the next morning. By using more than one remedy, you can combat headaches, nausea, and fatigue, so you don't have a hangover from ruining your day.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Treating the Headache
Step 1. Take a medicine such as ibuprofen or aspirin
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) relieve inflammation and pain, thus helping to fight headaches. Take them observing the dosage indicated on the package leaflet.
Avoid painkillers containing acetaminophen. If you take such a drug when ethyl alcohol is present in the body, you risk having liver problems
Step 2. Relax in a dark and quiet place
Bright lights and loud noises can exacerbate migraines. If you have a wine hangover and don't have to go out, lie down in the bedroom and turn off the lights. Close the windows and curtains. Turn off the TV and radio. Resting quietly and in the dark helps prevent migraines from getting worse.
If you have to go to work, turn down the brightness of your computer screen to keep it from being particularly bright. Wear a pair of headphones or earphones to reduce ambient noises
Step 3. Take a warm shower or bath
The heat relaxes the muscles and can decrease the intensity of pain. If you can't or don't feel like getting in the shower, rest your head on a heating pad.
Step 4. Apply ice to your head
The cold emanating from the ice will numb the area most affected by the migraine, helping to soothe the pain. Wrap the ice pack with a paper towel or cloth to prevent it from being excessively cold on your skin.
Apply the compress at 15-minute intervals, allowing for a quarter of an hour break between each use
Method 2 of 3: Fighting the Nausea
Step 1. Take a calcium carbonate or bismuth subsalicylate medicine
Designed to treat stomach pain, these drugs are also effective in relieving nausea. Read the package leaflet to know the dosage of the drug.
Step 2. Drink ginger flavored water
Ginger is a root characterized by anti-inflammatory properties, effective in relieving nausea. Cut a small piece of it and put it in a glass of water. Sip the drink (avoid ingesting bits of ginger that float in the liquid) to ease the discomfort.
- To relieve nausea, drink ginger water instead of a carbonated ginger drink. These drinks actually contain infinitesimal amounts of ginger, not to mention that carbonation can intensify stomach pain.
- If you don't have ginger, you can make a turmeric-based tea, which offers similar results.
Step 3. Get out for a breath of fresh air
Some people find that fresh air helps relieve nausea. If you feel unwell and don't want to go out, open a window and sit next to it: the breeze coming in from outside could make you feel better.
Step 4. Avoid eating dairy and spicy foods
Being difficult to digest, dairy products can make nausea worse. Spicy foods, on the other hand, can irritate the stomach and make it even more upset. If you're hungry, go for light foods like apple puree, toast, and white rice.
Method 3 of 3: Recover the Forces
Step 1. Drink lots of water throughout the day
By causing sweating, vomiting, and frequent urination, a wine hangover can make you dehydrated. If you add dehydration to your hangover, you risk feeling worse. Consequently, drink lots of water. If you have an upset stomach and can't drink, try to at least sip a little water at a time.
Avoid energy drinks and prefer water. These drinks are high in caffeine, which can exacerbate dehydration
Step 2. Eat carbohydrates
According to some studies, alcohol consumption lowers blood glucose concentration, so eating carbohydrate-rich foods helps you feel better when you have a hangover. Have a carbohydrate meal. Alternatively, if you feel nauseous, eat a light but carbohydrate-rich food, such as toast.
Step 3. Drink coffee to keep yourself awake
Caffeine helps get rid of the exhaustion typically associated with a hangover. Keep in mind that this substance can dehydrate the body, so be sure to drink more water if you decide to make a cup of coffee.
Step 4. Avoid ingesting larger amounts of alcohol
Drinking alcohol can temporarily relieve hangover symptoms, but it's not a good solution. Ingesting larger amounts of alcohol will only prolong the healing time and cause symptoms to return.
