Eggs are among the simplest and most satisfying ingredients available in the kitchen. Scrambling or poaching them using the stove takes only a short time, but cooking an egg in the microwave is certainly the quickest and easiest to do. By following a few simple steps, you will quickly learn how to properly cook eggs in the microwave.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Prepare a Poached Egg
Step 1. Get a cup or bowl
Any cup or bowl that can be microwaved will work, but those with a flat, circular base are best for making a regular-shaped poached egg. Once ready, you can easily lay it on a slice of toast.
Step 2. Grease the bottom and sides of the cup
Moisten a sheet of kitchen paper with a little olive oil and rub it on the inside surfaces of the container. If you have a bottle of spray oil available, it will make it even easier. Also, if you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil.
Step 3. Break the egg directly into the cup
Make the movements gently to avoid breaking the yolk.
Step 4. Add 80ml of water
Simply pour it over the egg.
Step 5. Cover the cup
You can use a heat-resistant plate or a plain paper towel. The purpose is to prevent any egg splashes from dirtying the walls of the microwave oven.
Step 6. Cook the egg
Put it in the microwave and turn the oven on at maximum power for 35 seconds. After the indicated time has elapsed, remove the cover from the cup and observe the egg closely. If the egg white is still liquid, return the egg to the oven and cook for another 10-15 seconds. Each model of microwave has a slightly different power, so you will need to adjust the cooking time according to the characteristics of your appliance. When the egg white has hardened, it means the egg is ready.
- By cooking the egg at maximum power, the yolk should be medium hard. If you prefer it to remain soft, reduce the power to 50% and cook the egg for about a minute. If necessary, continue cooking until the egg white has hardened.
- If you want a completely hard-boiled egg, cook it on full power for a full minute.
Step 7. Remove the cup from the microwave
Remove the cover and run a knife blade along the edges of the egg to detach it from the walls. At this point, by tilting the cup, you should be able to slide the egg out easily. Place it on a slice of toast or on a plate and serve it as you wish.
Method 2 of 4: Make a Scrambled Egg
Step 1. Get a cup or bowl
Any cup or bowl that can be placed in the microwave will do.
Step 2. Grease the bottom and sides of the cup
Moisten a sheet of kitchen paper with a little olive oil and pass it on the inside surfaces of the container. If you have a bottle of spray oil available, it will make it even easier. Also, if you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil.
Step 3. Break the egg directly into the cup
Make the movements gently, so you don't risk breaking the yolk.
Step 4. Add a tablespoon of milk
You can use cream if you prefer your scrambled egg to have an even creamier texture.
Step 5. Beat it with the fork
Break the yolk and beat it with the egg white and milk until you get a smooth, pale yellow mixture.
Step 6. Cover the cup
You can use a heat-resistant plate or a plain paper towel.
Step 7. Cook the egg in the microwave
Place it in the oven and cook for 45 seconds, then take out the cup to add the missing ingredients.
Step 8. Mix and add your favorite ingredients
Remove the cover from the cup and mix the egg to make it softer and more airy. Then, if you like, you can add a tablespoon of grated cheese, a small handful of chopped shallots or any other seasoning you prefer, then mix again.
Step 9. Cook the egg for another 30 seconds, then check that it is cooked
If it still hasn't completely set, put it back in the oven for another 15 seconds.
Step 10. Transfer the scrambled egg to a plate
Stir it a little more with the fork to incorporate air. It is now ready to eat!
Method 3 of 4: Make an Omelette
Step 1. Select a large dish suitable for microwave use
Ideally it should have a wide, flat base, which will match the shape of your omelette. The wider the base, the larger and thinner the omelette will be.
Step 2. Grease the bottom and sides of the pan
Moisten a sheet of kitchen paper with a little olive oil and rub it on the inside surfaces of the container. If you have a bottle of spray oil available, it will make it even easier. Also, if you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil.
Step 3. Break two eggs directly into the baking dish
Beat them with a fork until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Step 4. Add the milk and seasonings
Pour a tablespoon of milk into the pan with the egg, then add a pinch of salt and a sprinkling of black pepper.
Step 5. Add your favorite ingredients
There are no limits, as long as you can cut them into pieces or grate them. You can take a cue from one of these ideas:
- A grated hard cheese or a soft cheese cut into cubes;
- Chopped onions;
- Peppers cut into small pieces;
- Diced tomatoes;
- Chopped spinach;
- Ham, bacon or sausage (cooked) cut into small pieces.
Step 6. Cover the dish
Use a heat-resistant plate or paper towel.
Step 7. Cook the omelette on maximum power for 45 seconds
After the indicated time has elapsed, check that it is cooked. If it's not ready yet, put it back in the oven for another 30 seconds. Keep cooking it in short intervals until you are happy with the result.
Step 8. Slide it onto a plate
You can use a silicone spatula to facilitate the operation.
Method 4 of 4: Make a Mini Quiche
Step 1. Select a large cup suitable for microwave
Choose one with a flat, wide bottom and high sides.
Step 2. Grease the bottom and sides of the cup
Moisten a sheet of kitchen paper with a little olive oil and rub it on the inside surfaces of the container. If you have a bottle of spray oil available, it will make it even easier. Also, if you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil.
Step 3. Line the bottom of the cup with crumbled crackers (such as Ritz)
They will form the crust at the base of the quiche. All you have to do is crush them and spread them on the bottom of the cup.
Step 4. Prepare the eggs
Break two eggs into a separate bowl and beat them along with a spoonful of milk using the fork. Add a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of pepper and a handful of your favorite savory ingredients. Here is a list of hypotheses you can take inspiration from:
- Ham, bacon or sausage (cooked) cut into small pieces;
- Greek feta cut into cubes;
- Grated Gruviera;
- Chopped spinach;
- Diced tomatoes.
Step 5. Pour the egg mixture into the cup you greased earlier
It will coat the crumbled crackers and adhere to the walls of the cup.
Step 6. Cover the cup
You can use a heat-resistant plate or a plain paper towel.
Step 7. Cook the quiche
Turn on the microwave on maximum power for 3 minutes. When finished, check that the eggs are completely cooked.
Step 8. Eat your mini quiche straight from the cup
Enjoy it with a spoon as if it were a dessert.
Advice
- Cooking eggs in the microwave is much easier than cooking in a pan; it also allows you to use less oil, thus obtaining a lighter and healthier dish. It's a great way to have a healthy breakfast in the morning when you're short on cooking time.
- If you want to cook more than one egg at the same time, increase the cooking time as needed.
- You can add seasonings directly to raw eggs before cooking them in the microwave. Season them with salt, pepper, garlic powder, chopped spring onion, grated cheese or any other ingredients you prefer.
- Bacon goes perfectly with eggs at any time of the day, not just for breakfast. Remember to cut it into very small pieces.
- Remove the cutlery from the cup or dish before putting it in the microwave. Metal objects can cause sparks inside the oven and damage the appliance or home.
