Latios is a flying legendary Pokemon that can be very difficult to find and catch. Not only can it appear randomly anywhere in the world, but it escapes battle at the earliest opportunity. With the right Pokemon in the group and a good supply of items though, you can add Latios to your Pokemon collection with ease.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Appearing Latios
Step 1. Defeat the Elite Four and complete the story
In order to gain access to Latios, you will first need to finish the game's main story. On wikiHow you can find guides to help you do this.
Step 2. Go home
After beating the Elite Four, go back to your hometown of Pallet Town and talk to your mom. The TV will show a TV show and your mom will ask you a question about what was on the air.
Step 3. Tell your mom the Pokemon on TV was "Blue"
This will allow you to find Latios in Hoenn. If you choose "Red, you can find Latias instead, and you'll need an Aeon Ticket to find Latios."

Part 2 of 4: Preparing to Capture Latios
Step 1. Prepare yourself before starting the hunt
It can be incredibly catching Latios, as he tries to escape every turn, forcing you to find him again. Make sure you are ready before starting the hunt, to make catching that much easier.
Step 2. Keep your Master Ball
If you haven't used the Master Ball yet, this is one of the best times to use it. The Master Ball will catch Latios on the first try, making it the most effective means of catching.
If you have a master ball, you won't have to worry about other preparations, and then skip straight to the next section. If you no longer have the master ball, read on
Step 3. Train a Gengar or Crobat (Option 1)
Latios is an incredibly fast Pokemon, and if you want to have a chance to catch him without Master Ball, you will need to have a Pokemon with enough speed to act before him. Not only that, but your Pokemon will also need to know the "Bad Look" move. Gengar and Crobat are the two best candidates who meet both requirements.
- Train your Gengar or Crobat to at least level 50. This will ensure they are fast enough to act before Latios.
- When leveling up your Gengar or Crobat, make sure you don't forget the Bad Look move. Gengar learns it at level 13, while Crobat learns it at level 42.
- If you want to use the Super Repellent trick to find Latios more easily (see below), use Gengar and keep him at level 39.
Step 4. Find a Wobbuffet (Option 2)
Another strategy to catch Latios is to use Wobbuffet, which has the Shadowwalker ability, which prevents the enemy Pokemon from escaping.
- Train Wobbuffet up to level 39 to use the Super Repellent trick (see below).
- Make sure Wobbuffet is the first Pokemon in the group so it can trap Latios.
Step 5. Fill the rest of the group with powerful Pokemon
Once Latios is trapped, you will need to reduce his HP to be able to catch him. The best way to do this without risking defeating him is to use the False Swipe move. This move cannot drop the enemy Pokemon's health below 1 HP. This will ensure you don't defeat Latios.
It will be useful to have a Pokemon that can paralyze Latios, to increase the chances of capture
Step 6. Stock up on Ultra Balls
You will probably have to throw a lot of them in Latios.
Step 7. Get the White Flute
This item increases the likelihood of encountering Pokemon, and will help you find Latios faster. You can get the White Flute from the Glass Factory on Route 113. You will have to walk 1000 steps into the Soot to get it.
When you have the White Flute, give it to the first Pokemon in the group
Step 8. Stock up on Super Repellents (optional)
This trick can allow you to find Latios much easier, but it requires your first Pokemon to be level 39. The Super Repellent prevents Pokemon of a lower level than yours from attacking you. Since Latios is at level 40, you will need a level 39 Pokemon for this trick to work.
Part 3 of 4: Finding and Capturing Latios
Step 1. Trade Latios with a friend and then return it to him (if possible)
Before trying to track down Latios on your own, first try to get it from a friend with an exchange. When Latios is added to the Pokedex, you will be able to see its current location at any time, making it much easier to search. If you don't have anyone who can trade Latios for you, read on.
You can immediately return the Latios to your friend. You only need to have seen the Pokemon once for it to appear in your Pokedex
Step 2. Fly to the Safari Zone
This is the best position to try and catch Latios, as it allows you to quickly change areas to make him move.
Note: If you got Latios from a trade with a friend, use its location in the Pokedex instead
Step 3. Use Super Repellent (optional) and walk in the grass outside the Safari Zone
If you're using the Super Repellent trick, get one before you start walking. Otherwise, walk until a battle begins.
Step 4. Keep walking in the grass until you have fought some battles
If Latios doesn't appear, try changing its position.
Step 5. Enter and exit the Safari Zone to change the location of Latios
If you can't find Latios, enter and exit the Safari Zone. Each time you change areas, Latios moves to a new path. The goal is to keep doing this until Latios appears in the grass outside the Safari Zone.
If you have acquired Latios in a trade, do not leave the path where it is until you have captured it
Step 6. Capture Latios
Once the fight begins, you'll need to trap and capture Latios.
- If you have a Master Ball, use it on the first turn to catch Latios right away.
- Make sure you use your trap ability (Shadowwalker, Badguard) as soon as the fight begins.
- If you have Wobbuffet, Mirror Veil is very useful, as Latios uses a lot of special attacks.
- Use Paralyze to stop Latios from escaping.
- Use False Swipe to increase Latios's health to 1.
- Start throwing Ultra Ball as soon as Latios' health is low enough.
Step 7. Pursue Latios if he escapes
Latios will try to escape at any opportunity, but once encountered, you can check his current position on the Pokedex. Reach his new location and don't leave until you find him again.
Part 4 of 4: Get Latios if Latias Randomly Appears
Step 1. Get Latios with a trade
If you accidentally released Latias by answering "Red" when talking to your mother, the only way to legitimately get Latios is with an exchange. You can use the codes for Gameshark if you are using an emulator and cannot trade with other players.
Step 2. Use a Gameshark to get an Aeon Ticket
This ticket is an item released on the occasion of a special event, which allowed players to reach a special island where they could catch Latios or Latias, according to the Pokemon they had released. Since the ticket is no longer available, you will have to use tricks to get it. To use the codes for Gameshark, you will need to use an emulator such as Visual Boy Advance.
Although there are codes to get Latios directly, it is advisable to use the ticket instead. When you add Pokemon using codes, they may contain errors, so use the ticket instead and catch Latios as the game expects you to
Step 3. Enter the code for the Eone Ticket
In order to use it successfully, you will need to enter a code for the ticket and one for the event. You will also need to enter two Master Codes, for a total of four.
- Make sure Pokemon Emerald is running and click on the "Cheats" menu.
- Select "Cheat List …" and then click on Gameshark … to insert a new cheat.
- Enter the following codes, creating a new code for each separate box. Enter the "Description" in the "Description" field and then copy the code into the Code field.

Step 4. Retrieve the Aeon Ticket from your PC
After entering all the codes, restart Pokemon Emerald and log into your PC in game. You should find the ticket in the first slot. Collect it from the PC and add it to the inventory.
Step 5. Take the ship from Porto Alghepoli
With the ticket in your backpack, you will be taken to the South Island instead of Porto Selcepoli.
Step 6. Fight Latios
Once on the South Island, you can fight Latios using the orb in the center of the island. Latios will not try to escape in this fight, so use the techniques described above to tire and capture him.
