'Zentangle' are abstract designs, created using repeating patterns and normally structured into specific shapes thanks to the Zentangle method (it is a registered trademark). True zentangles are always created in 8, 5 cm squares and are always drawn with black pen on white paper. The creation of this method aims to make the act of drawing a pleasant, meditative and accessible activity for all. Read on to learn more.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Understanding the Zentangle Method
Step 1. Learn the basic definition of zentangle
It is an abstract design, which follows a certain pattern respecting the principles of the method. The artist creates his work within a square frame of 8.5 cm per side based on his creativity and the guidelines of the method. You don't need any special materials, no technological gadgets and no special instructions to become a zentangle designer. Here are the main features of a work of this type:
- The square does not have an "above" and "below", it has no orientation.
- It doesn't have to represent any recognizable object, it should be abstract.
- The drawing must be drawn with black ink on white page.
- A zentangle should be portable so as to be able to work on creation at any time inspiration arises.
Step 2. Observe how zentangle differs from other forms of visual art
It is a very different method from classical drawing and painting. Its purpose is to be a meditative activity that anyone can do. The process of creating a zentangle is as important as the result itself, which is appreciated for its unique beauty. Zentangle works must respect these philosophical principles:
- Creation doesn't have to be planned. When you start drawing one, you don't have to set yourself an ultimate goal. Instead, let the repetitive pattern of the lines develop on its own.
- The decision to draw a zentangle is intentional how sudden. Each line is created deliberately, without hesitation. Instead of erasing what is traced, the artist uses it as a basis to further develop the scheme.
- Its creation is celebratory. Just like meditation, the zentangle method aims to achieve a feeling of freedom and regeneration. It is a way to celebrate the beauty of life.
- A zentangle is timeless. No particular technologies or specific tools are needed, zentangle unites those who draw it in the ancient human gesture of putting a pen on a sheet of paper.
Step 3. Understand the difference between zentangle and scribble
Many people create scribbles, some even very beautiful, on the edge of notebooks or on a scrap sheet when they have difficulty paying attention to something else, such as a telephone conversation or a reading. Although scribbles may be similar to zentangles, there are actually many differences. Here are which ones:
- The zentangle method requires one complete concentration. Unlike doodles, the creative process of zentangle requires the utmost and unconditional attention, you cannot draw one while talking on the phone or listening to a lecture, because you are partly distracted.
- The zentangle method involves one ceremony of creation. You should stay in a quiet place where you can only devote yourself to art with respect. The pen and paper should be of the best quality, since it is a time-consuming task.
Step 4. Meet other zentangle artists
The method was developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas when they realized that the act of drawing abstract patterns following only a few basic rules was an extremely meditative action.
- To teach the method, you must become a certified Zentangle Master.
- There are over a hundred official zentangle works. If you want to recreate some you will find several online tutorials and textbooks. The works that recall the method, but do not adhere perfectly to the official guidelines, are defined as "Zentangle-inspired creations".
Part 2 of 2: Creating a Zentangle
Step 1. Get the right material
The method encourages artists to use fine printing paper with no lines or squares. Cut the sheet into a square of 8.5 cm per side.
- Parchment or textured paper is also fine, as long as there are no surface patterns.
- The sheet can be colored if desired, but it will not be considered a zentangle design in the strictest sense of the word.
Step 2. Draw the perimeter
With a pencil, slightly delimit the edges of the square by 8.5 cm. Don't help yourself with a ruler or other tools, just lightly brush the outline.
- If the line is slightly wavy (as is normal since it is drawn freehand) there is no problem. The perimeter is the only constraint to be respected in a zentangle work, within which the design will develop. If it has wavy and irregular lines, the final result will be even more unique and original.
- Don't put too much pressure on the pencil. It should not be visible once you finish the zentagle with the pen.
Step 3. Draw a sequence
Use the pencil for this. According to the zentangle method, the pattern must fall within the border and be a curved line or a scribble that gives structure to the design. The pattern you create will emerge based on the contours of the string. You should just sketch it out, with a light stroke of a pencil; its simple and elegant shape will divide the page into sections.
- Again, don't put too much pressure on the pencil. It must not be visible once the work is finished; its purpose is only to provide a guide to the reason.
- Some people have a hard time determining how to draw the string. Remember the philosophy that lays the foundation for the method: drawing must give you pleasure, flow naturally and celebrate life. Draw what instinctively comes out of your pencil in contact with the page, there are no right or wrong ways.
- If you want some inspirational patterns you can find string patterns online.
Step 4. Draw a "tangle"
This term indicates a ballpoint motif that traces the contours of the string. A zentangle can have one or more tangles. Use the pen and start drawing whatever pattern you can think of, even in this case there is no wrong way to proceed. As you work, remember the following:
- Tangles are made up of very simple shapes. A line, a point, a circle, a squiggle are all acceptable traits.
- You can add pencil shading to create more depth and make the drawing more interesting. This is not a mandatory step and you need to feel free to do it or not.
Step 5. Don't erase mistakes
With a pen, you can't eliminate mistakes. This is why no pencil is used except for shading. There is no way to go back.
- Each tangle must be generated one line at a time. Be wary of any signs you decide to draw, to make sure the pattern grows deliberately.
- Focus consciously on the work. Just like in meditation, it frees the mind of problems and worries. Remember that the act of creating a zentangle is a ceremonial.
Step 6. Continue working on the design until you are done
When the work can be considered completed, you will understand for yourself. Store the zentangle in a safe place or frame it to display and enjoy its beauty.
Step 7. Once the work is finished, you can also add color (optional)
But know that in this way the design will not be officially considered a zentangle.
