In the Pokemon games, Happiny is the baby form of one of the most popular Pokemon in the series - Chansey. Evolving Happiny into Chansey is harder than evolving most other Pokemon - it won't be enough to level it up. To evolve Happiny, you will have to give it an Oval Stone, then level it up during the day.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Prepare to Evolve Happiny

Step 1. Get an Oval Stone

The Oval Stones are objects capable of causing Happiny to evolve into Chansey. Once you have given one to your Pokemon, leveling it up by day will allow you to evolve it. To get one of these stones, just walk in the areas where they can be found. When your character walks on the correct square (decide randomly), the message "Your character has found an Oval Stone" will appear. Below, you will find the locations in each game where you can find the Oval Stones:

  • Diamond / Pearl / Platinum:

Lost Tower; the Underground; found on wild Happiny and Chansey

  • Heart Gold / SoulSilver:

Rocky Tunnel; Insect capture competition (first prize); Campo Concordia; found on wild Chansey

  • Black White:

Ascesi Cave; shop B of the Black City; inside the Clouds of Dust; found on wild Happiny

  • Black 2 / White 2:

Dust clouds inside the Ancient Path, Monte Antipodi and Passo di Rafan; White Forest

  • X / Y:

Unknown Cave (hidden in a rock to the left of Mewtwo); PokéMile Club (Flying Balloons, Level 2)

  • Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire:

    found on wild Happiny.

Step 2. If you don't already have a Happiny, find one

It is available in all games from Generation IV onwards. Its level doesn't matter - with the Oval Stone method, you can evolve it to any level. Below you will find the locations where Happiny can be found, for each game:

  • Diamond / Pearl:

Trophy Garden; hatch the egg donated by the coach to Hearthome City.

  • Platinum:

    Trophy Garden.

  • HeartGold / SoulSilver:

Pair Chansey or Blissey with a Lucky Incense.

  • Black:

    Exchanges only.

  • White:

    White Forest.

  • Black 2 / White 2:

hatch the egg donated by the trainer to the Zephyr City Rift.

  • X / Y:

Pair a Chansey or Blissey with a Lucky Incense.

  • Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire:

    Mirage Forest, Mirage Mountain.

Step 3. Wait for the day

Happiny can only evolve into Chansey during the day. From the fourth generation of Pokemon onwards (also the first where Happiny is available), the time within the game is the same as the clock on your device (and consequently the real world if your clock is accurate). Note that the definition of a day in Pokemon varies from game to game.

Read below for more information for each generation:

  • Generation IV (Diamond / Pearl / Platinum / HeartGold / SoulSilver):

    10:00 AM-7: 59 PM

  • Generation V (Black / White / Black 2 / White 2):

    • Spring: 10:00 AM-4:59 PM
    • Summer: 9:00 AM-6:59 PM
    • Fall: 10:00 AM-5:59 PM
    • Winter: 11:00 AM-4:59 PM
  • Generation VI (X / Y / Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire):

    11:00 AM - 5:59 PM

Step 1. Give the Oval Stone to Happiny

When you've got yourself an Oval Stone and have a Happiny, you have everything you need. Start by opening the Backpack and selecting the Oval Stone. Select "Dai" from the menu that appears, then select Happiny from the Pokemon list.

If you did everything right, a message should appear on the screen telling you that Happiny is now holding the Oval Stone. Happiny will hold the stone until you manually change its item or until you evolve it

Step 2. Make Happiny go up one level

Make the Pokemon fight and win a fight. It doesn't matter which Pokemon you face - it can be a trainer Pokemon or one found in the grass. If you win and Happiny will participate in the battle by surviving, she will gain experience.

  • If you are in an area with a lot of strong Pokemon and don't want to risk making your low-level Happiny faint, you could use the Exp Share item, which also allows Pokemon that don't participate in the battle to gain experience points.
  • To further increase the amount of experience points earned, you can raise the affection level (Gen. VI) or have active Step Power (Gen. V) or O-Power (Gen VI).

Step 3. Observe Happiny's evolution

When Happiny gains enough experience points to level up, she should immediately evolve. Congratulations! You now have a Chansey.

  • Note that the Oval Stone will disappear after evolution.
  • Keep an eye on the clock when trying to level up Happiny. If you fight long enough for the night to come, Happiny will not evolve into Chansey and you will have to wait for the day or adjust the time and try again.

Advice

  • Don't feel like waiting for the day to come? Try saving the game and manually changing the console's system clock.
  • Now that you have a Chansey, you can search wikiHow for articles on how to evolve it into its next evolution: Blissey.
