Learning how to build a speaker allows you to customize its shape and design according to the type of sound you want. The basic design of a pair of speakers is that they are sealed and pierced. This article explains how to build a sealed speaker cabinet, which separates the front and return sound waves to improve the quality of the low frequencies.
Steps
Step 1. Determine the size of the speaker cabinet
-
Refer to a construction diagram to find the measurements of the crate.
The construction diagram is usually included in the speaker package. If you can't find it, contact the manufacturer to ask for information or take the measurements yourself:
- Calculate the depth (front to back) of the speaker by adding approximately 5cm to the length of the speaker.
- The height and width of the speaker will match the height and width of the inner case.
- Multiply depth, height and width to determine the internal volume of the case.
Step 2. Compare the internal volume of your crate with that recommended by the manufacturer
Adjust the measurements, if necessary, until you reach the specifications recommended by the manufacturer
Step 3. To calculate the external dimensions of the crate, add the thickness of the wood to the measurements
Step 4. Measure the height, width and depth of the space the crate will contain to make sure it fits
Use these measures to modify the design, if necessary, according to the space you have available
Step 5. Build the sound box
-
Draw construction lines on the MDF (medium density fiberboard) board with the outer crate as a reference.
Include the front circular hole for the speaker and those for the connectors. You can find the measurements on the speaker diagram. If there is no diagram, trace the speaker circumference on the front and a hole of about 5 cm on each side for the connectors
- Use a jigsaw to cut the panel according to the project.
- For circular cuts use a cutter.
- Scrape the rough edges.
Step 6. Assemble the crate with wooden slats (2-1 / 2cm x 2-1 / 2cm)
- Cover 60% of the internal edges with the battens.
- Secure the battens to the panel with screws.
Step 7. Pre-assemble the various pieces to make sure they fit together
Step 8. Drill the holes and spread a layer of wood glue on all edges as you assemble the crate
Use carpenter's clamps to keep the crate square
Step 9. Put the speaker in the case and check that the shape is right
Step 10. Mark the location of the mounting screw holes while the speaker is inside the enclosure
- Remove the speaker and drill holes.
- Let the glue dry.
Step 11. Apply the silicone along the inside edges of the case and in correspondence with all the holes to ensure the hermetic seal of the case
Let the silicone set for 12/24 hours
Step 12. Prepare the speaker
- Connect the speaker cables.
- Fill the top, bottom and back of the cabinet with 2cm of glass wool to minimize resonance.
- Insert the speaker and connect the connectors through the appropriate holes.
- Secure the speakers with screws through the holes provided.
- Seal any holes to ensure the case is airtight.
- Let the insulation dry for 12/24 hours.
