This article explains how to use the Thunderbird email client to receive and send emails using a Yahoo Mail account. Yahoo Mail, by default, prevents users from using email clients other than Yahoo's default to manage their email correspondence, so the first step is to change this setting by logging into the Yahoo Mail site. After doing this, you will be able to set up Thunderbird on both Windows and Mac systems.
Steps
Step 1. Log in to the Yahoo website
Visit the URL https://login.yahoo.com/account/security?scrumb=qdwntcNeyBy and log in using your Yahoo account address and corresponding password.
If you've recently logged into Yahoo Mail, you may not need to log in again
Step 2. Click on the "Allow apps that use less secure login" slider
It's located at the bottom right of the account settings page. This will allow the Thunderbird email client to have access to Yahoo Mail.
Step 3. Launch Thunderbird
It features a blue bird and gray globe icon.
Step 4. Click on the Email item
It is located in the center of the main page of the program. A pop-up window will appear.
Step 5. Click the Skip this step button and use an existing address
It is located in the lower left corner of the window.
Step 6. Enter your Yahoo email address and corresponding password
Click on the "Email Address" text field and type in your Yahoo account address, then click on the "Password" text field and enter the corresponding login password.
Step 7. Click the Continue button
It is located at the bottom of the window.
Step 8. Select the account type
Click on the radio button corresponding to one of the following items, according to your needs:
- IMAP - in this case the e-mails will be stored in the Yahoo Mail mailbox, while on Thunderbird only a copy will be downloaded when you synchronize the data (the computer must be connected to the internet).
- POP3 - in this case the e-mails will be downloaded to your computer and deleted from the Yahoo Mail mail server.
Step 9. Click the Done button
Thunderbird will now have access to your Yahoo Mail account. The synchronization of your emails will start automatically and you will see your Yahoo e-mail appear in the Thunderbird window.
