Are you tired of your Yahoo inbox? Would you like to try the Gmail one? You are in the right place, here is a simple guide that lists the steps to take to fulfill your wish. It might seem like a difficult thing to you, or reserved for geeks, but it isn't, it's a simple step, affordable for everyone and fun.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Automatic transfer
Step 1. Open your user profile with Gmail
Think carefully about what you would like your new email address to look like, create it and log in for the first time.
Step 2. Select the 'Settings' item
Click with the mouse on the button that looks like a gear, located at the top right.
Step 3. Select the menu bar item called "Account and Import"
It is the fourth.
Step 4. Click on the link for "Import messages and contacts"
Enter the email address of your Yahoo! and click "Continue". Enter the login password and click on the "Continue" button again.
- The incoming mail (POP) server address is pop.mail.yahoo.com. Remember that the address can change depending on the state you live in, normally only the final extension should change, for example if you live in Germany you may have to enter this address: pop.mail.yahoo.de
- The standard communication port is 995.
Step 5. Select, with the check button, the import options that interest you
You can decide to import old messages, contacts and future new messages for the next 30 days.
Step 6. Pay attention:
only messages that are already in the inbox will be imported. They will be labeled with the label you entered in the import options. If you have other messages scattered in the folders of your Yahoo! account that you are interested in moving you will first have to bring them to your inbox and then, through this procedure, you can automatically import them into Gmail.
Step 7. Pay attention:
you will not be able to import emails from Hotmail or Yahoo. Until these email service providers log into their POP3 servers you won't be able to import mail.
Method 2 of 2: Manually transfer contacts
Step 1. Log into your Yahoo
and select the "Contacts" label.
Step 2. In the contact page select the item "Actions" and, from the drop-down menu that will open, select the option "Export all
..".
Step 3. Select the "Export" button related to 'Yahoo CSV'
Step 4. Save the csv file to your desktop for convenience
Step 5. Log in to Gmail
Step 6. Select "Contacts" from the drop-down menu at the top left, just below the word Google
Step 7. From the menu on the left select the item "Import contacts", it is one of the last
Step 8. In the dialog box that will appear click on the "Choose file" button and select the csv file you have saved on your desktop
Click "Import" to import.
Step 9. Last step:
you will have to manually format the imported data (name, e-mail address, home address, telephone, etc.) because they will all be stored together in the "Name" field of the Gmail contacts.
Advice
- To back up your Yahoo account you can use online data storage services, then you can import your emails to Gmail. By doing this you will have a regular backup of your Yahoo mail and in addition you will be able to have it available to import it into any other profile, including Gmail.
- Access via IMAP server should, at the moment, still be free, the references for access are at the bottom of the section.
- If you want to leave your Yahoo! go to the mail options and select "Auto reply". Write a short message in which you suggest that the sender write to you at your new Gmail address. This email will be sent as a response to all those you will receive. If you want you can also write a short e-mail to all your contacts informing them of the changes made.
-
You can activate forwarding of mail to another mail address. To activate the automatic forwarding go to the mail options, select "Pop and forward" and then click on the button "Forward Yahoo! Mail to another email address", enter the Gmail address and click "Save".
Note: The following settings only work if you are setting up a mail account IMAP and not POP. Some software may perform the configuration automatically, but here you will still find the data for a manual configuration.
-
IMAP:
- Server type: IMAP mail server
- Address: imap.mail.yahoo.com
- Port: 993
- Connection encryption: SSL / TLS
- Type of authentication: by password
-
SMTP:
- Address: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
-
Port: 465
- Connection encryption: SSL / TLS
-
Type of authentication: by password
Warnings
- Remember, especially for the first time, to occasionally check your Yahoo mailbox, someone may have sent you an important message forgetting about your change of e-mail address. Yahoo deactivates mail profiles that have not logged in for more than 4 months as "dormant profiles".
- Gmail now supports both importing and exporting contacts in csv files. Gmail files in this format are compatible with Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express) so when you want to transfer contacts from your mail client, make sure it is compatible with Microsoft Outlook CSV files, everything will be easier.
- Be careful when using tools such as Yahoo's "automatic reply" because all the people who write to you, without any type of filter, will know your new e-mail address, so even the bad guys can take note of it to send you the spam. This will happen whether you want it to or not.
