While it is impossible to completely isolate your car from outside noise, you can greatly reduce annoying noises and vibrations by soundproofing it. This way you will not only create a more pleasant environment inside the car, but you will also be able to make the most of your audio system without the noise or echoes and vibrations of the chassis.
Steps
Step 1. Choose insulation materials such as mats, foams, sprays or insulation; it is recommended to use a combination of these products to better soundproof your car
Insulating materials absorb sound waves, eliminate echoes and reduce vibrations.
- Insulation mats: These are simple to install materials that you will need to use to cover the panels of your car. They are generally made with styrene-butadiene rubber or tarred panels, have an adhesive side and work by reducing the resonant frequency of the panel or by transforming sound waves into heat.
- Sprays: you can find them in professional cans (which require compressors and gas guns to apply them) or in simple spray cans. Use these products when a mat would be too bulky or too heavy, for example on the doors.
- Foams: You'll find them in sheet or spray form. Foam sheets are used like floor mats, placing them on the car's panels to absorb vibrations. Instead of converting the vibrations into heat, the foams disperse them on their surface.
- Insulations: these are thick layers of sound-absorbing fibers to be placed under the mats. The most used type of insulation is jute or micro jute. While this is less effective insulation in terms of soundproofing, it will serve to insulate the whole of your car as well as create a softer mat.
Step 2. Add weight to the panels using insulation mats
This way the panels will vibrate less and cause less unwanted noise.
Step 3. Place the mat between two of the adjacent door panels to help reduce vibration in the space between them
Step 4. Place the mats inside the hood to reduce the noise of scrap metal
The mats contain a metallic texture that makes them more resistant to heat, and for this reason they can also be used inside the engine. Apply them using a specific glue that you can find in a shop that sells auto parts.
Method 1 of 2: Sprays and Foams
Step 1. Fill in small spaces using sprays or spray foams
These insulating materials expand when they dry, and for this they are able to push against the neighboring panels creating a soundproofing joint that absorbs and disperses the energy of the vibrations. You can use the sprays and foams near the doors and hood, but be sure to check the label for recommended conditions of use.
Method 2 of 2: Insulations
Step 1. Measure the door panels and floor mats on the bottom of the car you want to soundproof
Step 2. Cut the insulation or insulation mat according to the measurements you have taken
If you are installing insulation, be sure to remove the car mat before proceeding to the next step.
Step 3. Apply glue to the parts of the car where you want to install the insulation products
