Oracle VM VirtualBox is a program to install operating systems on virtual machines, for example to use Windows on Linux. If a program doesn't work on Wine, it will probably work in its native Windows environment. Using VirtualBox is easier than partitioning and installing Windows on a Linux machine.
Steps
Step 1. Install Virtualbox
Virtualbox operates as if it were a computer hosting several operating systems.
Step 2. Extract an ISO image from the Windows XP CD you have
IMGburn and k3b do this.
Step 3. Click New (the first button under the menu)
Step 4. Use the Wizard to create a partition for Windows
XP is the system selected by default, so you just have to give it a name, for example Windows XP.
Step 5. Choose the amount of RAM to dedicate to this machine
Don't allocate too much of it as you will take it away from your main operating system, creating a possible crash.
Step 6. Create a new HD if you don't have it
Click Next. The Wizard for creating the disk will appear, with which you will choose the size of the disk and whether you want to make it dynamic or fixed.
Step 7. Review the final summary and verify that everything is correct
After that, the machine will be created.
Step 8. Click the Settings button and load the ISO image
Click the Storage section on the left. Click on the blank CD in the Storage list.
Step 9. Open the Virtual Media Manager by clicking on the folder icon with an arrow up, after CD / DVD, under Attributes
Step 10. Add the image by clicking Add, then choose the location of the ISO image
Select it and press OK in the Settings window. Start Virtualbox by pressing Start.
Step 11. Install Windows
At this point you should see the windows installer. Since you have not yet installed the Guest Additions, you will need to use the Host key (Right-Ctrl).
Step 12. Install the Guest Additions
While the machine is running, under Devices, click Install Guest Additions, this will start the setup in Windows. You will now have mouse integration, so you no longer have to press the Host key. You can also copy and paste through both operating systems. Now that you have Windows installed, you can install the programs you want to use.
Advice
- Add Filters in USB settings to allow USB port operation.
- Continue customizing your machine via the Settings menu.
- Some programs (such as games) may not have 3D capabilities due to the limitations of Virtualbox. This may require a separate partition for Windows.
- Visit the Virtualbox site for documentation, updates and support.
Warnings
- Some settings like EFI or IO APIC may not be compatible with XP, so don't enable them or you may crash and you'll have to reinstall everything.
- Watch out for 3D games if you don't enable 3D acceleration or your video card doesn't support it. Virtualbox has several limitations in 3D functions and may crash (even your entire system) if you play a game without such support.
- Not all operating systems are supported by Virtualbox. Such systems do not have Guest Additions for the desired features.
