To securely lock the locker of the school, gym, bicycle and many other things, it is useful to have a padlock. If you know the combination, opening it will be really easy - just a couple of turns left and right and that's it - the lock opens. If you want to know better how to do it, just read the instructions in this article.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use a New Combination Lock
Step 1. Find the combination
If you have just purchased the lock, you should find the combination on a sticker inside the package or on the back of the lock itself.
- Only a few models do not have a pre-set combination and must be set by the buyer.
- Even if you don't intend to use the original combination for a long time (assuming you can change it), it's worth keeping it until you get comfortable with the lock. Keep the note in your wallet, purse, or other safe place.
Step 2. Cancel the combination (if possible)
Most locks allow you to undo the combination and replace it with one of your choice. This is usually a procedure that can only be performed with the hook open. If the lock is closed and you have forgotten the combination, you cannot reset it.
Some models have a "reset key" that must be pressed to cancel the combination and enter the new one. With the latch open, use the tool that came with the lock (or a needle or pin) to push the reset button
Step 3. Memorize the new combination
There is no need to look for the note with the combination numbers every time you have to open the padlock. This is a sequence you should easily remember.
Method 2 of 3: Open a Combination Lock with a Single Knob
Step 1. Turn the knob clockwise three times
This model of lock has a complex mechanism that unlocks only if you follow a certain procedure. Turning the knob to the right in this way cancels it and puts it in the open position.
Step 2. Stop turning when the reference notch is at the first number of the combination
The notch is usually a line at the top of the knob, at 12 o'clock. In many cases it is red or some other visible color.
Step 3. Turn the knob counterclockwise one full rotation
Go past the first number until you reach the second of the combination.
Step 4. Stop the knob when you reach the second number in the combination
Step 5. Turn the knob clockwise and stop at the third number
This time it is not necessary to complete the rotation, but you must stop as soon as you reach the last number of the combination.
Step 6. Open the lock
In simple models with only one U-ring you simply have to lift this element upwards. Alternatively, grab the padlock by the ring and pull the body that contains the mechanism.
If it does not open, repeat the procedure from the beginning. Since you may have partially activated some toggles, you must first reset the lock
Method 3 of 3: Open a Combination Lock with Multiple Knobs
Step 1. Understand how this model works
A lock with multiple knobs is a simpler object than the one described in the previous section. The mechanism consists of a single piston with a differently jagged profile with ridges (each ridge corresponds to each knob). The plunger can only be pulled over the knob if there is no obstacle blocking the jagged profile. Each knob has an open section that allows the crest to pass through, for this reason the piston moves freely only when the combination is correct.
Unlike single-knob models, this type of lock does not need to be reset and there is no clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation method to follow
Step 2. Turn each knob to enter the combination
It doesn't matter which direction you rotate it (although some models are limited in one direction only).
- Most locks have three to five knobs.
- Some models use letters instead of numbers, making it easier to remember the combination.
Step 3. Open the lock
You shouldn't feel any physical resistance (unlike what happens in models with a knob). If you run into difficulties, check the combination.
Advice
- Pulling the closing hook (the U-shaped part of the padlock that closes what you want to secure) only increases the friction inside the mechanism. Do not touch it and the lock will open much easier.
- When you turn the knob, you don't have to get to exactly the right number. You can stand about two numbers apart and the combination will still work.
