This article explains how to use Google Translate with an iPhone or iPad camera to translate signs and other printed materials.
Steps
Step 1. Open Google Translate on your iPhone or iPad
The icon looks like a blue and gray folded sheet with a white "G" on the front. It is located on the main screen.
Step 2. Select the language of the text you want to translate
The default language of the iPhone or iPad is at the top left. If the sign or printed material is in another language, follow these steps:
- Tap the tongue in the top left.

next to the tongue. A pop-up window will appear giving you the option to download the language file.
- Tap "Download".
- Tap the arrow in the top left to return to the main screen.
Step 3. Select the language you want to translate into
If what appears at the top right is not the language you want to translate the text into, follow these steps:
- Tap the tongue at the top right.

next to the tongue.
- Tap "Download".
- Tap the arrow in the top left to return to the main screen.
Step 4. Tap the camera icon
It is located in the lower left, under the box titled "Tap to type text". This will open the camera.
Step 5. Frame the text
When you frame the printed text, Google Translate automatically shows the translation in the language that appears at the top right.
