Method 1 of 2: Use a Sock or Donut for a Chignon
Step 1. Purchase a bun bun or choose a clean sock
Bun buns can be purchased at hair accessory stores, but they can also be easily created with a sock. What you need is a wide stretchy tube sock that is easy to roll up. Use an old pair of socks because you will need to cut off the toe.
- It is preferable to opt for a sock whose color is similar to that of your hair, but any sock will do.
- If you have a bun bun, go straight to step 4.
Step 2. Cut the toe of the sock
You now have a long tube open on both sides.
Step 3. Roll the sock back on itself starting from the top
You will see a small donut forming before your eyes. Make sure you roll the fabric evenly and firmly.
Step 4. Gather your hair in a ponytail
You can opt for a high or low ponytail, depending on the style you prefer. If you want your bun to look full, tease the ponytail lightly to create more volume. If you prefer it to be thin and neat, style your hair straight.
- It is preferable to style hair that has been washed for 2 or 3 days in a bun, as it is less slippery. If you have oily roots, apply a small amount of dry shampoo.
- If you are styling your freshly washed hair, apply a veil of spray hairspray to add texture to your hairstyle and make it last longer.
Step 5. Insert the tail into the hole in the center of the donut
Make sure all the hair goes through the hole. Slide the donut a few inches from the tip of the ponytail so that the ends of the hair stick out of the hole.
Step 6. Spread the ends of the hair around the donut
Tuck the tips under the bun, so that your hair is evenly distributed around the shape, covering it.
- This step takes some time, as you need to make sure your hair completely covers the sock or bun. Try to spread them evenly so that no empty space is left.
- If your hair is not thick enough to cover the shape, it is advisable to choose a smaller size.
Step 7. Roll the tail around the donut or sock

Method 2 of 2: Use Two Hair Ties
Step 1. Collect your hair in a ponytail
Secure them securely with a rubber band. You can opt for a high or low ponytail, depending on the style you prefer.
Step 2. Cotton the tail
You will get more volume and make it easier to handle. To back it up, keep it straight, insert a comb near the tips, and move it back towards the base of the tail.
Step 3. Collect your hair in the shape of a bun
To do this, locate the center of the tail and evenly gather the hair around its base, so that it shapes into a donut. It may take a few tries before you can pick them up neatly and evenly.
Step 4. Secure the ends of the hair with a second rubber band
While holding the hair bun in place with one hand, use a second rubber band to secure the tips around the base of the ponytail. Wrap it up several times to make sure the bun doesn't come undone.
- At this point, check your bun in the mirror. Make sure the hair has been properly tied up in a donut shape.
- If the bun feels too soft, use a third elastic to hold the ends of the hair in place.
Step 5. Use bobby pins to secure the bun against your head
Use two or three bobby pins and pin it flat and parallel against your head. They will help prevent it from falling or melting.
