Having a poodle comes with certain costs, and one of the most expensive is certainly the grooming. However, you can learn how to do it yourself. It's an experience that will help you develop a closer relationship with your four-legged friend and save you a lot of money in the long run. Grooming a Poodle sounds difficult, but in fact anyone can learn. All you need is patience, goodwill and practice. This article will teach you one of the main steps in grooming, which is combing your dog's coat.
Steps
Step 1. Brush the fur from bottom to top
Work from the tail to the head of the poodle and use a special brush. Afterward, repeat with a medium or wide tooth comb. The brush removes any loose hair, while the comb helps loosen the knots.
Step 2. Now, brush the fur in the opposite direction, ie from head to tail
Make sure you brush deeply as you go in this direction; you must be able to reach the skin of the poodle.
Step 3. Unless you are sure the dog is free of fleas, use a flea comb to remove them and untie any remaining knots
Divide the hair into two parts; then, comb from root to tip.
Advice
- If you want to take your dog to a groomer, choose it carefully. Talk to other Poodle owners to find a good one.
- You have to decide which cut you prefer. The coat of poodles can be styled in many different ways. In any case, the choice will partly be dictated by the time and effort that you are willing to dedicate to the grooming of your four-legged friend.
- If you are unwilling to take care of your dog's grooming, or you don't have time to do it, you need to choose a professional.
Warnings
- Grooming a medium-sized poodle completely takes about three hours, but only once you get the hang of it. The same goes for toy or miniature poodles.
- Learning how to groom is not immediate: you will gradually acquire new knowledge. At first, you can get the job done in a couple of days, giving yourself and your dog a break. Don't get stressed out and take your time.
