Among pet birds, the budgie is probably the most widespread in the world. He is also extremely intelligent, so you can teach him to speak. But remember that you need to be patient, as it takes time.
Steps
Step 1. Wait until he is about 3-4 months old before you start teaching him to speak
Step 2. Get a budgie that is already used to you
It is impossible to teach him to speak if he is scared.
Step 3. Repeat the word you want me to learn
And repeat it again, and again. Keep repeating it. Try using it in context so you can teach it the meaning. For example, when you approach him say "Hello", or when you leave, say "Goodbye". Of course, it's a lot more fun to teach your budgie about more imaginative things!
Step 4. Maintain a cheerful tone of voice
Budgies tend to learn swear words quickly, as they are often spoken in an angry and animated tone. So be careful!
Step 5. Try writing the word on a piece of paper and stick it near the cage
This way your guests will be tempted to read aloud, and maybe they'll remember it too!
Step 6. Pay attention
When budgies say their first word, they often say it so quietly and quickly that you can't even realize it and it seems their usual incomprehensible verse.
Step 7. Put on some music
When the budgie is happy, play some music to calm him down. Sit in a chair and talk to him; when it seems well disposed turn off the music and leave the room leaving it for 2 or 3 minutes; then come back, put your hand close to the cage and tell him the word you are teaching him, hello, goodbye, no and yes. When it's time to sleep, read him a story. When you see him relaxed, take him out of the cage. Let it fly and talk to it as it flutters around. Then put it back in the cage, turn on the music again, put your hand near it and hold it in one place; don't move it, and whisper the word you are teaching him.
Advice
- During practice, if he catches you, try not to overreact; he may get scared and lose his temper, or lose interest in saying what you are teaching him.
- It takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. It may seem to you that he will never learn, but only by continuing to try will he eventually be able to speak.
- Male budgies are more vocal than females, so you know you have a better chance of teaching a male budgie.
- If you talk to your budgie well and kindly, then he will listen to you easily.
- Before you try to get him to talk, make sure he is calm, that he is used to seeing your hand moving around his cage, and that he is not flapping his wings or screaming. The important thing is that he is relaxed and calm enough.
- Don't try to teach him to speak as soon as you've bought him; let it settle for about 1-3 weeks.
- Never force him to speak. It takes practice. If you want him to learn to speak faster, take him out to play more often.
- Budgies seem to learn to speak more easily from women and children, which means that if you have a higher pitched voice, they will learn soon.
- They learn best to imitate hard sounds like D, B, T, etc …
- Start by teaching him a word, and then you can proceed with sentences.
- If he tells you what you want to hear, give him a treat so he knows what you want from him.
Warnings
- Don't try to catch the budgie when it makes mistakes, everyone does, sometimes.
- Never try to grab it for any reason. He would come to hate you!
- You are teaching a relaxed budgie, and he too may want a relaxed teacher, who doesn't try to snatch any sound from him in all ways. Instead, show him that you don't care if he makes a mistake, and show him that you're comfortable.
- Be careful as it may suddenly bite you.
