The huge and innocent eyes of the anime characters are very popular among people of various tendencies. Colored contact lenses are one of the ways to achieve this look, but they can be expensive and always require the advice of an ophthalmologist so as not to damage your vision. However, carefully applied makeup can give a similar effect. Once you master the technique, experiment with different products and styles to customize your look.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Enlarge the Eyes with Makeup
Step 1. Apply concealer and foundation
Use these products to hide dark circles and create a foundation to work on. Choose a foundation that is lighter than your skin tone.
Step 2. Add eye primer
Cover the area around the eyes with an eye primer to keep the makeup intact and make it last. Pat it all the way around to the eyebrows, but not on top.
Step 3. Use an eyeshadow
With a brush, spread the eyeshadow around the eyes. Although you can use any color, it is recommended to use softer and lighter shades to achieve the graceful look typical of the gaze of female anime characters. If you choose to use a light eyeshadow, mix it with a shade of brown on top to create a detachment with the white eyeliner you are going to apply later.
Step 4. Highlight with a shimmer eyeshadow (optional)
For a shimmering effect, add some shimmer powder around the inner corners of the eyes. You can skip this step if you don't like the flashy effect or if you don't have this type of product.
Step 5. Create a clear outline on the inside of the eye
Use a white or clear eyeliner to draw a V along the tear duct area, in the inner corner. Slightly stretch the outline along the inner rim of the eye, but no more than 1/3 of its length. It will give the illusion that the eye is larger and, concentrated in the inner corner, will make the eyes appear closer.
- The inner rim of the eye is the lash-free area that touches the other eyelid when closing the eyes.
- Some make-up brands produce eyeliner specially created to widen the eyes.
- You can use pencil or liquid eyeliner.
Step 6. Draw a longer outline with black eyeliner
To make the look more expressive, apply a black or very dark eyeliner along the upper and lower inner lines of the eye. Avoid the area where you used white eyeliner and try to outline it carefully. On the outer corner, extend the eyeliner past the inner rim by 1-2 cm, to make the eye appear slightly larger. It's optional, but you can create a small comma in the corner. The lateral commas give the eyes an even bigger and more incisive appearance, but if they are too compact they can weigh down and make the expression of the gaze smaller. In such a case, one moves away from the characteristic style of anime.
- To outline the contour, you could get a more natural effect by closing your eyes and taking advantage of the natural crease.
- Avoid smoky eyeliner, as it can make your eyes look smaller.
Step 7. Apply black mascara
Use a "volumizing and lengthening" mascara to make lashes thicker and longer. Typically, outer lashes appear thicker than inner lashes in anime characters, so focus on the former. There are two main approaches you can use to achieve different effects. They are described below. Choose one, but remember to let the mascara dry before applying it again:
- Apply several generous applications of mascara along the lashes for a bold and striking effect. This option is not recommended if the mascara is grainy.
- Apply it by giving three brush strokes to each part of the lashes: outer, middle and inner. If necessary, repeat it until you get the desired effect.
Step 8. Apply false lashes (optional)
If you are still not satisfied with your look, add more emphasis by using false lashes. Get demi lashes or shorten the long ones before using them. To enlarge the gaze, apply them a little further back than you normally would, at the top of the inner rim of the eye, or even just slightly behind. It's optional, but you can add the false lashes on the lower lids as well.
- If you don't want to use false lashes, curling your naturals, you can achieve a similar, albeit less accentuated, effect.
- Anime characters often have "separated" eyelashes. To do this, consider dividing your false lashes into 2-4mm tufts instead of keeping them homogeneous.
Part 2 of 2: Obtaining Other Typical Characteristics of Anime Style Eyes
Step 1. Change your eye color using contact lenses
The "circle lenses" (lenses that enlarge the iris) can give a more incisive effect to the make-up, especially if they have an unnatural color. you do always an eye examination and then purchase contact lenses from a reputable optician. If they are poor or don't apply well, they can cause serious eye damage.
- To make your eyes stand out even more, try scleral contact lenses, which cover almost the entire corneal surface, i.e. all the visible part of the eye.
- Always wear contact lenses before applying mascara.
Step 2. Use a light lipstick or lip gloss
Lipsticks with dark or bold colors make the lips fuller and larger, distracting attention from the eyes. On many types of face, marking the lips and eyes at the same time can create a less harmonious appearance. Therefore, consider a light pink lipstick or clear lip gloss.
However, you can make the lips heart-shaped if you intend to imitate an anime character that has this characteristic
Step 3. Add the pink blush
You can accentuate the innocent look of female anime characters by applying a light pink blush on the cheekbones. For a rather original anime look, swipe it across the bridge of the nose, from cheekbone to cheekbone.
Step 4. Change the look with colored eyeliner
Purple, blue, or green eyeliners can make them look even less realistic. So it's best to use black eyeliner instead if you want to imitate anime characters that are cyberpunk or have an uncommon style.
Step 5. Trace the eyebrows
A tall, thin browbone looks more alive than one that has a more natural expression, especially when drawn quite sharply. Alternatively, you can also use less common colors.

Step 6. Apply two teaspoons to the eyes
Place two teaspoons in the refrigerator or cold area for 20-30 minutes. Place the concave part over the eyes until the teaspoons have warmed up. It is a trick to pull the skin around the eyes and momentarily widen the gaze.
Advice
- To get a more exaggerated or bizarre effect, draw the outline following the shape of the eye entirely. Apply the false lashes just above the cheekbones and use the light eyeliner to lengthen the eye underneath. You can also use black and white eyeliner to draw the pupil and sclera on the closed lids, adding a white sequin over the fake pupil.
- Try not to make your eyes too eccentric, or you risk being made fun of.
- Once you have anime style eyes, you can say whatever you want, for example "Sugoi" or "Kawaii". There is nothing wrong with being a weeaboo. Everyone is free to express themselves freely!
- Before putting on your make-up, you can practice drawing the eyes you would like to have.

- Always consult an eye doctor before purchasing non-prescription contact lenses, otherwise you run the risk of serious eye damage.
- Remove your makeup before going to bed to protect the health of your eyes and skin.
- Never use products that claim to enlarge the pupils. They can cause serious damage.
- While putting on your eyes so that they look like anime won't make you Japanese or an anime character, feel free to do and believe what you want and don't let others stop you.
