Hair mousse (not to be confused with chocolate mousse) is a product used to style hair to make it more voluminous and give it a shiny look. It is lighter than gels and creams, an advantageous feature for several reasons: it does not weigh down the hair or make it sticky. The foam is perfect for men and women, especially if they have thin hair and want more volume. To learn how to apply it perfectly and style your hair, read on!
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Quickly Style Short Hair
Step 1. Moisten your hair (or not
). With this method, you will use the mousse to give your hair a more vibrant look quickly and easily. You can get them wet if you want, but that's not essential. As a general rule, the wetter they are when you apply the mousse, the shinier and "wetter" they will appear when you finish combing them, so spraying them or running them under the tap for a moment are acceptable solutions. If you choose to get your hair wet, make sure it is evenly wet - don't leave dry spots. If you soak them completely, first pat them dry with a towel to remove excess water or quickly pass the hair dryer; the result must be that of hair that has just come out of a shower.
- The mousse is perfect for those men who want to get the most out of thin hair or those who don't want to carry something around to keep them tidy all day - just a splash of water will be enough to reactivate it and you can fix it again.
- The mousse can also thicken thinner and sparse hair.
Step 2. Put some foam in the palm of your hand
Keep the can straight for best results. Start with a small walnut - if that's not enough, you can always add more. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, the amount can vary slightly - for an average length, try an egg amount.
Using too much lather can give your hair a shiny but slightly flat look. It will be fine if you want to keep them back, but if you try to volumize them, use little
Step 3. Work the mousse into your hair
Distribute it with both hands. Run your hands through your hair from the forehead to the nape of your neck. Pay special attention to the roots (the part of the hair near the scalp). Make sure the mousse is well distributed, use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to work it so that the hair gets completely soaked. You can also try to make them stand straight by insisting on the roots with your fingertips.
If your hair is particularly long, you will get better results with a methodical approach. Read "Part 1" previously described to apply the mousse to the hair
Step 4. Dry your hair
Use a blow dryer on low speed for an Ace Ventura style hairdo. Part your hair with a comb so that the blow dryer reaches the roots. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something quieter, dry your hair in the open air and fix it with your hands.
- If you blow dry them, they will stay stiffer than air drying. In this second case you can easily rearrange them during the day with your hands.
-
Style your hair while drying. Most men's hairstyles only require a few easy movements. The foam is perfect for those styles that do not require extreme hold, for a ridge of at least 3 cm it is better to use gel or grease. Here are some hairstyles you can do yourself:
- Swipe your fingers from the nape of the neck forward to give the hair a fuller and more voluminous look. This tip is suitable for those who want to get maximum volume from very thin hair.
- Those with thick hair can collect it in a sort of crest in the center of the head (fauxhawk).
- Those with an eclectic soul and long hair can try combing them to the side for a look like "Flock of Seagulls", the famous English band.
Part 2 of 3: Adding Volume to Long Hair
Step 1. Start by moistening your hair
They should be completely wet, but not dripping. Run them under the tap or shower. If they get too wet, just dab them with a towel.
Save time by taking a shower. This way, your hair will already be wet and you won't have to waste even the sink water
Step 2. Apply the mousse starting from the roots, strand by strand
Shake the can and holding it vertically, spray a dab of foam on your hand. Divide the hair and apply the mousse to the root of each lock, starting from the nape and gradually moving towards the top of the head. Do not be afraid to spray the foam directly on the hair if you do not exaggerate it will not be noticed once it dries. Distribute it evenly on the scalp with your fingers.
- If you are in a hurry, throw your head forward letting your hair fall and apply the foam starting from the roots, massaging with your fingers.
- If you have time, work methodically by dividing strands with each application. The better and more evenly you apply the mousse, the more volume you will be able to give to your hair.
Step 3. Distribute the mousse through your hair
Use your hands to work the mousse so that it is evenly distributed over the entire length of the hair. If necessary, add more. Use a wide-toothed comb or brush gently to help distribute the product.
Step 4. Dry your hair
As it dries, the mousse will solidify slightly giving more volume and strength to your hair. Use a blow dryer on a low speed, paying attention to the roots. The deeper you dry the roots, the stronger the support will be for the hair; in this way you will have a greater volume.
- To part your hair and dry it thoroughly, use a comb or brush. For extra volume, brush your hair repeatedly by lifting it 90 degrees to your head as you blow dry. They will thus have a full-bodied and very swollen appearance.
- Alternatively, air dry them. With this option you will not have as much volume, but a "wet" and shiny look. You can comb them to make sure they are smooth and manageable without affecting the hold.
Step 5. Style your hair
Now that you have voluminous hair, style it however you like! This step is totally at your discretion, there is no right or wrong solution. Here are some ideas (which you can mix and match):
- Make the most of the volume for a "messy" look.
- Add some curls. Wrap side strands around a brush, heat them with the hair dryer, then let them cool. Unroll the lock and let it fall.
- Control frizzy and curly hair. If they react negatively to moisture, use a little foam while combing them normally to keep them in check.
Part 3 of 3: Using the Foam Like an Expert
Step 1. Identify the type of hair you have
Hair is different in structure and thickness. They can be thick, thin, straight, wavy, curled, frizzy, greasy, dry, or a combination of multiple characteristics. The mousse should be suitable for almost all hair types, However due to the particularly light seal, it may not be suitable for larger ones. Here are some tips for using the mousse according to the type of hair:
- Subtle: apply it quietly from the root along the entire length to add volume.
- Greasy: wash them before applying the mousse. Leave the shampoo on for a few minutes before rinsing off.
- Thick, or curly: Apply a light conditioner to soften them and control the tendency to frizz.
- Thin and / or dry hair: use a softening mousse with extra hold.
Step 2. Learn the options
Not all foams are the same. While a medium should go for almost any hairstyle, some specifically formulated, offer certain benefits. Here are some types of mousse you might find on supermarket shelves and at the hairdresser:
- Extra hold mousse - for windy days and particularly untamable hair.
- Softening mousse - repairs and serves to style dry and damaged hair.
- Scented mousse - many have a delicious added scent, choose the one you prefer.
- Mousse gel - a hybrid that offers great hold without weighing down the hair like a traditional gel.
- Thermal Care Mousse - specially created to work together with the heat of the hair dryer or curling iron.
Step 3. Create your foam
If you like to experiment, it's easy to make a foam. Break two eggs, separating the whites in a bowl. Beat the whites with a whisk. The air that will be incorporated will give it a light and foamy consistency. Beat the whites until they are soft and form almost solid peaks. Now apply them like a normal mousse. Scrub your hair with this lather and let it dry briefly, then comb it however you want!
Don't worry: if you don't like the results or the idea of having raw eggs in your hair doesn't inspire you, remember that just washing them will remove them completely
Advice
- The mousse can be used on both straight and curly hair.
- Due to its volumizing properties and lightness, it is suitable for thin, dull hair that needs some body. If you have thick hair, gel or similar is recommended for better hold.
Warnings
- Be careful that the foam does not get into your eyes, mouth or ears.
- When drying, don't burn your head.
- The foam is lighter than the gel but does not provide as much security in holding. If you have to go out on a windy day, use a stronger product.
