A double chin is often the natural result of aging or gaining a few pounds. If you wish to streamline this area, there are several approaches. The right haircut, specific exercises and good posture are all easy changes that you can put into practice right away.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Make it look smaller
Step 1. Use makeup that "strategically" hides the chin
Try to make the jawline more prominent by using a powder that is slightly darker than your complexion. The powder should be blended from ear to ear and on the chin area. Distract attention from your neck with a bright blush and special eye makeup. If you are not capable on your own, ask a beautician to show you how.
- Eyeliner and mascara make the eyes bigger and allow you to divert attention from the neck.
- Minimize the attention the lower part of your face can attract by using a natural toned lipstick.
Step 2. Change your hairstyle
Make the hair fall just at the height of the chin or be very long as both styles attract the eye of the viewer of the double chin area. A medium length cut just below the chin is the best choice. Here are some options:
- Try the loin. This classic cut is great for people with a pronounced chin. It should stop about 2.5-5cm below the chin.
- Scaled cut. Cut your hair shorter at the nape and longer in front. The latter reduce the size of the chin and divert attention.
- Wavy cut. A voluminous hairstyle balances the face and distracts attention from the chin.
Step 3. Grow a beard
If you are a man, a beard can go a long way in making the double chin look smaller. Make it grow on your neck too, keep it well-groomed, albeit thick. This masks the neck and chin.
Step 4. Don't wear choker necklaces
They are tight around the neck and emphasize the double chin, as well as the fact that they may leave red marks. If you still want this look, there are similar ones to dog collars that you can wear as normal necklaces.
Step 5. Evaluate your clothing
Do the clothes you are wearing make the double chin appear bigger? Wear a dress with a wide, open neckline to draw attention away from the chin. Avoid high-necked shirts and blouses, as well as turtlenecks and tops with too flashy details.
Step 6. Check your posture
How do you feel when you are standing? If you keep a slouching position you create several depressions and protrusions in some areas of the body, including the neck, as the fat is deposited in the soft areas. Stand straight, keep your head straight, shoulders back, and don't hunch over. Contact a physiotherapist, who can recommend simple but effective exercises to improve your posture. Stay active.
Part 2 of 4: Training the Chin Zone
Step 1. Do chin lifts
This exercise helps you strengthen your neck and face muscles. To do this, stand with your back and neck straight. Lift your chin up and look at the ceiling. Puck your lips forward and hold the position for 10 seconds. Do 10 repetitions. If you do the exercise every day, you will get good results.
Step 2. Rotate the neck
Stand with your back straight. Turn your head from side to side while keeping your chin parallel to your shoulders. The eyes should follow the movement of the head. Slowly bend your head down, move to the other side and repeat 10 times.
Step 3. Train your platysma
This muscle band runs through the neck starting from the mandible. Stand with your neck straight. Contract the tendons of the jaw by placing your lips over your teeth and bringing the corners of your mouth inward as if you were frowning. Hold the position for 10 seconds and then relax. Repeat 10 times.
Step 4. Use a tennis ball
Place it against your neck and try to hold it steady with your chin. Press your chin firmly into the ball and then loosen your grip a little. Repeat the exercise 10 times.
Step 5. Chew gum
It is a simple exercise because it does not even require mental commitment. Chewing gum strengthens the jaw muscles and helps reduce double chin. Make sure it's sugar-free, as it may even make you fat.
Part 3 of 4: Lose Weight
Step 1. Do a general workout
By exercising your whole body you will also lose fat in the neck area. In fact, it is very difficult to get rid of lipid accumulations in a localized way and often the face is the last point where you lose weight. Start a steady routine with cardio and strength training that will help you slim down your double chin.
- Running, swimming, and cycling are great cardio activities. Plan on doing them at least 30 minutes a day 4 times a week.
- Go to the gym and get help from a personal trainer to learn the right techniques and strength exercises. Learn how to lift weights and work all muscle groups.
Step 2. Limit your calorie intake
In this way you decrease body fat and consequently also that in the face. Satisfy your hunger with fruit, salads, and other low-calorie foods. If you want to seriously address the problem, know that losing weight is the ultimate solution.
- Don't try extravagant or restrictive diets. Your new meal plan will be something that will accompany you for the rest of your life. Aim for small but continuous weight loss and maintenance.
- Your diet should include lots of fiber, fruits, vegetables, and water. Consult a nutritionist, dietician, or your doctor for other advice.
Part 4 of 4: Go deeper
Step 1. Contact your doctor
If the problem is fluid buildup around the chin / neck, other considerations may need to be made. If there is only water retention, the doctor may recommend a massage therapist who can help you with massages to unblock the drainage, to assume a correct posture and to relax.
Step 2. Appreciate yourself for who you are
Your appearance is not limited to your physical and genetic characteristics. The way you dress, present yourself, how you communicate with others, how you relate to them and how much confidence you convey as a human being are worth much more than your double chin.
Advice
- Don't spend too many hours on the computer every day. If you have to work on the computer all day, do some stretches every half hour.
- Puffy and voluminous scarves help hide the double chin. However, avoid dresses like turtlenecks or turtlenecks, as they highlight the chin area even more.
- If you have a genetic tendency to double chin (for example your parents have it), you will have even more reasons to exercise and eat healthy to avoid having it or to reduce what you already have.
- We live in the age of the "cult of youth" and unfortunately we have forgotten how to age with dignity and accept the reality of human anatomy. As you age, you will gain wisdom and freedom, much more important than looking young.
