If you've just got a new puppy but haven't had a chance to prepare or buy him a kennel yet, you'll need one ASAP. A quick and easy kennel using the things you already have around the house is your best bet until you can go and buy a new one.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Decide where the dog will sleep
Step 1. Decide where you will sleep the dog
If, for the first few weeks, you want him to sleep in your room, you will need to make some space. If it will be the laundry room, the kitchen, the garden porch or other places, find a suitable spot that is warm and away from drafts.
- In particular, choose a spacious place to hold the kennel (and for your dog!).
- Choose a quiet spot where your dog will not be disturbed while sleeping.
Method 2 of 5: Use a box as a bed
Step 1. Look for a box
It should be large enough for your dog's size. Fill the box with old towels or blankets. If you also have an old pillow, it is advisable to put it in the box and use it as a base and then cover it with a blanket.
Encourage your dog to get into the box by patting his new kennel
Method 3 of 5: Fabric bed
Step 1. If you can't find a box, use fabric and padding
For example, wrap an old towel, blanket, or curtains around a pillow.
Step 2. If you don't have a pillow handy to use as a filling, put some old clothes in a pillowcase
Now, wrap the towel or blanket around the padded pillowcase and place it where the dog will go to sleep.
Method 4 of 5: Dog bed with an old sweater or cardigan
Step 1. Get a woolen or comfortable sweater or cardigan that you no longer use
Step 2. Use the sleeves to tie the sweater in the shape of a roll or otherwise round
Nudge it until it feels comfortable and resembles a dog bed.
Step 3. Put it in the place where the dog will sleep
Encourage your dog to try it.
Method 5 of 5: Doghouse with basket or suitcase
Step 1. Search the house for an old basket or suitcase
If you can find one large enough to make into a kennel, this could also become the permanent dog bed.
Step 2. Put something soft to stuff the suitcase or basket
A pillow is ideal.
Step 3. Cover the basket or suitcase
Use an old blanket, towel, or sweater. Wrap the article around the mattress you added.
Step 4. Encourage your dog to enter the new kennel
Pay attention to the lid of the suitcase; it is better to remove or flatten it if it can be closed (especially for old and hard suitcases), or fold it back under the base of the suitcase (for softer and more flexible suitcases).
Advice
- If your dog doesn't like his bed, try to fix it. Does he like the place you have chosen? Does the box or the padding have a strange smell? Think about all possible problems.
- To help your dog get used to his kennel, try putting his favorite toy or blanket inside.
Warnings
- Your dog may try to bite the box or padding.
- If your dog chews out of stress, don't put the bed near poisonous substances, such as house plants.
