If you are a beginner perhaps this is not the right project for you. The risk of doing harm could be equivalent to the cost of a professional. However, if you have DIY experience you can install a gas line as safely as a professional would. While the margin for error is small, the following steps only require some electrical and plumbing work.
Steps
Step 1. Buy the right material
Domestic gas pipes use a 1.27cm black pipe, while larger projects require wider pipes. Buy ducts that are 15-30 cm longer than the required length.
Step 2. Close the gas valve
The valve is located near the pressure gauge and must be closed with a quarter turn. A position perpendicular to the pipe indicates that the valve is closed, but check the indicator to make sure it no longer moves.
Step 3. Extend the gas line by inserting the valves and pipes necessary to reach the new appliance
- Cover the threads of the ends of the pipes using tape or suitable glue. It is essential to obtain an airtight conduit. If you're using thread tape, wrap the ends clockwise.
- To make things easier for you, assemble the pipes in your garage or shop and then bring them to the place where you want to install them. Pay attention to the 90 degree corners which are more difficult to fix and tighten well.
Step 4. Use a hose to connect the end of the duct to the appliance
Use some glue or tape just like you did before. However, you will rarely need glue or tape when connecting the duct to the appliance.
Step 5. Use a mixture of water and liquid dish soap along the joints of the duct
If you see bubbles then there are leaks. If applicable, unscrew the sections in question and reapply the sealant.
Step 6. Turn the valve to open the gas
Check that the appliance is working properly.
