Even if it doesn't look like it, the mirrors are incredibly heavy. Bathroom mirrors are designed to be very large, sometimes taking up entire walls. The mirrors are installed on the wall using brackets or strong glue. Try following these steps to remove your bathroom mirror.
Steps
Step 1. Protect the sink area
Place a cardboard or plastic cover on any surface surrounding the mirror.
Step 2. Cover the mirror with masking tape
The masking tape will limit the falling off of pieces of glass if the mirror shatters during removal
Step 3. Use a hair dryer to soften the glue
Alternatively you can use a small heat emitting lamp.
Dry each area of the glass evenly with hot air. Insist on the glued areas firmly
Step 4. Ask a friend to assist in removing the mirror
It is important when removing a mirror from the wall that someone is ready to grab it in case it slips off. It is even more important in the presence of large mirrors
Step 5. Lift the mirror off the wall starting from the edges
Use a long putty knife.
Step 6. Tighten the string of a guitar or piano with both hands
Insert it between the mirror and the wall and make movements as if you were sawing. This will separate the mirror glue from the wall.
Step 7. Repeat the process of detaching the mirror from the wall and reheat the glue if necessary
Step 8. Lift the mirror off the wall
Use a nail bar after the glue has been sawn off.
Step 9. Get the mirror off the wall
Advice
- The wall may need to be repaired once the mirror has been removed, before mounting a new one.
- If you are not going to store the removed mirror, wrap it in plastic and break it with a hammer. This way the plastic will hold the glass pieces and it will be easier to remove the frame.
- If the bathroom mirror is not attached to the wall with glue, your work will be much easier. Remove the brackets with a screwdriver and slide the mirror off the wall gently.
- If all attempts to remove the glue or brackets from the bathroom mirror fail, cut the area of the plasterboard wall surrounding the mirror.
Warnings
- Do not remove the mirror by yourself. Get someone to help you get the mirror off the wall.
- Do not try to remove the mirror with your bare hands. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Wear protective gloves and goggles.
