Brooches made with buttons are beautiful and inexpensive pieces of costume jewelry that you can make yourself. They have no limit of color, size and shape, the possibilities vary according to the buttons you choose to use. They are easy to make and you can make one for any event, even at the last minute.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Create a Button Brooch
Step 1. Choose the buttons
The color and style of the buttons is entirely up to you but you may want to consider one of the following ideas:
Step 2. Choose similar colors
Step 3. Choose the same color:
this might be fine when you want it to stand out on a monochromatic tee.
Step 4. Choose the colors of the rainbow
Step 5. Choose different types or sizes of buttons
Step 6. Whichever button you choose, make sure they are in excellent condition and can withstand being made into a very often used piece of jewelry
Older, more fragile buttons may not be ideal for this project.
- Decide if you want to alternate the colors of the petals or have them all the same color. For alternating colors, choose an even number of buttons. Arrange the buttons in a circle, alternating colors and check that the look fits. If they are all the same color you can also have an odd number of buttons.
- Choose the center of the button flower. For this, the button must be much larger than those used for the petals, as they will have to go around it. You can use a button in the same color as the petals or a button in a completely different color, style and texture, as long as you like how it looks.
Step 7. Place the center button over the circle already made of button petals
Make sure you can see the petals poking out from under the center button.
Step 8. Find a button that is a little smaller than the large one you used for the center
Put it on top of the larger button. Do the same with any other layers you want to add (of course, it all depends on the size of the center button).
Step 9. Glue all buttons together
Step 10. Turn the center button backwards
Using hot glue, glue the petals in the center. Then turn it over. Use hot glue again, but this time to add the middle layers. You will have thus attached a flower of buttons.
Step 11. Using foam rubber, cut a circle the same size as the center button
Glue it to the back of the flower.
Step 12. Open the safety pin
Put some hot glue on the side that won't open. Place it in the center of the foam circle. Then put a lot of glue on both sides of the pin, and on top of the part that doesn't close. Hold it down for a few seconds. Then let it dry. If necessary, add more glue until the pin is firmly attached.
Step 13. Finished
Enjoy your new button brooch.
Method 2 of 3: Making a Simple Button
Step 1. Purchase the plastic base
You will need to purchase bases for interlocking buttons. You can find them online or in a DIY store. There are many different sizes and you can take as many as you need (from 20 to more than 200!).
Step 2. Prepare the image
Print and cut out the image you want on your button. Make sure the image you have is exactly the same size as the base of the button and print it on plain paper. Crop the images as precisely as possible.
Step 3. Insert the image
Put the printed and cut out image inside the concave part of the base. Put the image facing the concave part.
Step 4. Add the back
Close the back of the base and that's it! Simple!
Reuse if necessary. Simply detach the button and insert a new image in place of the old one
Method 3 of 3: Making a Professional Button
Step 1.
- Purchase a button print. For a professional and easy-to-produce finish, purchase a button press. It doesn't cost that much and will make the job a lot easier if you have to make several hundred buttons.
- You can also buy a cheaper version by hand, but the result will also be poorer.
- You can also get some letter openers which will make the process even easier. Just make sure they are the right size for your machine.
- Buy the metal base. You will need the disc, the back and the clear plastic front. Make sure it is for a button machine and that it is the same size as the buttons produced by your machine.
Step 2. Prepare the image
Print and cut out the image you want on your button. Make sure the image is the right size for the base you have and then print it on plain paper. Trim the images as accurately as possible.
Step 3. Place the back in the machine
Make sure the machine is in the home position. Put the back in the middle, with the back down and the pin line horizontal.
Step 4. Put the disc into the machine
The disc should be the next piece, bottom side down.
Step 5. Place the image
The image should be facing up and aligned perfectly with the pin.
Step 6. Place the clear plastic
Place the plastic over the image.
Step 7. Press down
Press the lever until you hear a click.
Step 8. Lift the lever
Move the machine to the second position.
Step 9. Press again
Press firmly. This time there may not be a click.
Step 10. Enjoy your button
Lift the lever again and your button should be completed. There may be a key to release the button more easily.
