Vehicles with alloy wheels have visible brakes, giving the possibility to bring out the calipers, coloring them. Italian sports cars, like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, have painted calipers, and maybe you want to give your car the same sporty look. By painting the brake calipers your car will look customized and expensive. To do this, you will need to take the wheels apart and prepare the surface so that the paint adheres well.
Steps
Step 1. Remove the tires to access the brakes
You can also paint the brakes by removing them, but you will not get as good results. Start on one side and then move on to the other.
-
Loosen the bolts half a turn, using the appropriate wrench.
-
Pull the handbrake.
-
Use a jack to lift the car to one side. The wheels must rise from the ground.
-
Place a kickstand near the front wheel and one near the rear wheel. The machine is now safe.
-
Remove the bolts, take the wheels apart and set them aside.
Step 2. Clean the calipers
First rinse them with the water hose to remove dirt and debris.
-
Wet a wire brush in cleaning liquid and scrub the surface. Use diesel fuel, mineral alcohol or an alloy wheel cleaner that you can easily find at any auto parts store. Remove any grease and dirt that is present.
-
Rinse with water.
- Apply a specific brake cleaner spray. It will dry quickly and prepare the surface for painting.
Step 3. Cover the parts that are not to be painted
Use plastic bags or newspaper and paper tape to cover the brake discs and linings
Step 4. Choose the type of paint and color
The calipers get hot during use, so you'll need to choose a heat-resistant paint.
Buy a specific brake product from auto parts stores or DIY stores. You can also use a paint suitable for metals
Step 5. Paint the brake calipers
-
Use a container and a brush, even if you buy spray paint. Spray the paint into the container instead of using it directly on the piece to be colored. In this way you will get a more precise result and you will be able to reach the most difficult points.
-
Dip the brush into the container and apply a coat of paint to the piece.
-
Let it dry according to the times indicated on the jar or can.
-
Apply 3 more coats of paint, for a total of 4 coats. Let it dry each time.
-
Apply a final coat with the can for a more polished result.
Step 6. Let it dry for 24 hours
Step 7. Refit the wheels and remove the jack stands, returning the car to the ground
Step 8. Test the car to make sure the brakes are working properly and check the finished result
Step 9. Apply copper grease to brake parts after testing
The grease will lubricate the brakes and prevent them from freezing.
Advice
- Be careful not to paint the discs or linings. These parts must remain clean to function properly.
- You can choose the color you prefer. The most used are black, blue, red and yellow.
